Ohoh, I put this smiley too close to the letter "o" and got an angel?!- It should say, "So, no."

Yes, I would at least try to learn the language. It's the polite thing to do. Besides, you learn a lot about a culture when you learn its language.

Whether or not I would actually succeed in learning the language is a different question. I have a very bad memory, and some difficulty learning. I lived a year and a half in Mexico, specifically to learn the language. I learned enough to communicate, but I'm still pretty awful at speaking it. But, the people in Mexico were very pleased with and supportive of my efforts to learn Spanish.

I'd at least give it a go. Although I guess it would depend where in the country I lived.

Take Wales as an example - we have our own language, but it's not widely spoken in the South-East. So if I moved there from another country I probably wouldn't learn more than the basics. But if I moved to North/West Wales, I'd definitely make every effort to learn the language, it's far more widely spoken up here.

I would, but I find languages to be a fun challenge.

Yes, I would try and learn the language if most people spoke it as a sign of respect for their language and culture.

i would make every effort to learn it. it seems to me that its sort of rude if you dont.
you'd pick it up a lot quicker being in the country rather than just sat in a room being taught it.

I think most people on this thread saying they'd make an effort to learn the language are probably full of bs and wouldn't likely learn anything other than 'hello my name is' and 'where is the bathroom?'

I have a friend from germany she's 21 her family moved here when she was 13. She always wanted to be a primary school teacher but can't because she didn't learn irish in school. When she was in school she demanded to be taught because of this reason. There is a stupid rule that if you moved to the country past the age of 5 you are exempt from learning irish.

18 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Tuesday 12/23/03 - 6:34:55 AM EST (GMT-5)
I would. I imagine if I moved to a non-English speaking country, it would be hard to meet new people if I only spoke English.
