There's nothing wrong with advertising, but mud-slinging should not be allowed.

How can they be expected to compete with one another if they don't, well, compete? Campaigning *is* advertising. And potential voters can hardly be expected to go out and educate themselves about candidates that don't bother to make their ideas known.

How do we know what their policies are if they don't do some form of advertising??

Exactly. I would say that in the political arena "advertising" is the same thing as "campaigning" and while it's sometimes annoying, it's still necessary.

What I'm a bit concerned about is that voting on average in the western society has had lesser and lesser people voting. Some countries who where behind the iron curtain now have to take elections several times due to poor turnout.

Why not?

if they didn't advertise, then no one would vote, or would just vote based on the candidates' looks or charisma. Well, it would be a lot more common.
