TAIPEI, Taiwan, Aug. 4 — Their weird glowing green color makes them look like they’ve been swimming in a nuclear plant’s spent fuel pond. But the zebra fish on sale in Taipei shops have an even stranger background: They’re the latest in genetically modified fish, and their bodies contain DNA from jelly fish, making them shimmer in the dark.

Shopkeepers call them “Night Pearls.” Some have nicknamed them “Frankenfish.” Their makers at the Taipei-based Taikong Corp. use the less catchy name “TK-1” — the world’s first genetically engineered fluorescent fish.

Those aren't new...they've been around for a long time now. I've never had one, and they're not expensive...but after awhile the glowy-ness fades. But wait! I think the pet shop people said those ones had flourescent dye injected into them or something, but I swear they look just like the ones in the picture. I think it's the same thing. Either way, I don't buy fish...I feel bad for them, I mean, they have no lives, and they're not really any fun. Plus, it's really easy for them to just die...yeah, I'll stick to pets that don't live in water.

Glow in the dark fish is a spiffy concept but the genetic altering of them is weird to me.

Sounds cool, but I bet some idiot dumps them in a pond somewhere and bingo, ecological nightmare.

^^^That's exactly the kindda ignorance and fear people show for genetic research and genetic modification, that I've been saying (writing) all this time.

Ignorance and fear? Where did you get that from? Khaki is completely right that if they were released into the wild, they may cause severe ecological problems. ANY species new to an area would, even if they weren't cloned.
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Monday 11/3/03 - 7:50:39 AM EST (GMT-5)
well i gues they are safer than candles.
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Monday 11/3/03 - 7:51:27 AM EST (GMT-5)

18 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Friday 12/5/03 - 1:09:04 PM EST (GMT-5)
Can you cook them?
18 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Friday 12/5/03 - 1:09:04 PM EST (GMT-5)
If they are compatible with my white cloud mountain minnows yes I would.
18 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Friday 12/5/03 - 1:10:42 PM EST (GMT-5)
Heh. "I think selling genetically modified fish as pets is wrong."
18 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Friday 12/5/03 - 1:20:06 PM EST (GMT-5)

18 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Thursday 12/11/03 - 5:36:06 PM EST (GMT-5)
Hahah that would be kinda cool. I could put it in my room as a night light.
18 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Thursday 12/11/03 - 6:09:14 PM EST (GMT-5)
The fish are sterile. If someone decided to dump them somewhere you wouldn't have to worry about glofish cross-breeding procreation.
18 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Friday 12/12/03 - 9:17:59 AM EST (GMT-5)
Would they eat other species?
18 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Friday 12/12/03 - 9:20:51 AM EST (GMT-5)
I think allowing this would set a disturbing trend.
18 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 12/17/03 - 1:45:34 PM EST (GMT-5)
No, I wouldn't be able to get to sleep!
