I like the dead more.

Greatful Dead is legendary, you can't really argue with that. Though, personally, I prefer listening to Phish.

The fact that you called them 'hippie bands' totally discredits this question. There is no 'hippie' genre of music, and not everyone who listens to these bands is a hippie. But, I don't like either. Not my style of music

I like them both, but Grateful Dead is the better one, although I like Phish's name better.

The dead is the original. Phish (I like and respect them) are good, but c'mon lets face it... I highly doubt if their wasnt the dead Phish would be alot different today.
I grew up on the dead. One of the only times I ever saw my father cry was the day Jerry died. I will never forget that.

My aunt gave me this skatebord she had when she was a kid and it's theme is the grateful dead.

I haven't listened to Phish, so Grateful Dead.

I don't know that this is really a great question, but it sure as Hell interests me.
I'm 99% for the Dead on this one, but I can understand the merits of each, and the comparison.
Similarities: jam bands with huge repertoires who tour(ed) incessantly (Well, the way I phrased it, that's just one similarit*y*.)
Why I like the Dead better: They're better to dance to. When they hit a groove, they actually stick with it for a while, allowing you to find a rhythm. W/ Phish, by the time you hit some kind of stride, they switch it up on you. I can never get comfortable dancing to them.
