whoever approved this shouldn't of... they have a similar question about 8 cups of water, which is just 3-5 ounces less than 2 liters. :-\ Oh well. Anyway, I usually drink a bout 32 oz. Sometimes I do more, but not usually. And including everything I eat and drink, I'im sure I do drink 2 liters.

The only reason someone would need to drink that much water in a day is if they are an athlete or are on drugs/have a condition that makes them need lots of water. The body needs 8 cups of water a day, but that's from ALL sources - from your food and any other drinks you have besides water you'll probably get at least 6 cups a day. Leaving you needing 2 cups less, which isn't even one full 20 oz. bottle. I try to make myself drink two 20oz. bottles per day, and when working out in a lot of heat I'll have Powerade or Gatorade to keep my electrolytes up. But if you drank two liters ON TOP OF your daily coffee, milk, and meals, all you are going to do is make it so you have to pee a lot. And going even farther over that limit can be toxic - too much water reduces the sodium levels in your blood and can lead to a heart attack. A racer died not too long ago because she only drank water during her marathon and not sports drinks. You have to be really careful with lots of water.

Yeah...I've had like 14 cups/day because of the heat. I had heat exhaustion and that just bites. Never again.

I try to, but sometimes don't quite manage it.
17 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Monday 9/15/03 - 4:08:37 AM EST (GMT-5)
everyday! +1-2 extra litres during heavy exercise
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 10/19/03 - 12:10:05 AM EST (GMT-5)
Let's see...a litre = 34ish US fluid ounces. I don't drink 68 ounces of water a day. That's way too much. I'd piss myself to death.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 10/19/03 - 12:55:11 AM EST (GMT-5)
Kikipeppers said it, that whole 8 cups a day/2 litres thing is misleading.
17 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Tuesday 11/25/03 - 9:48:19 AM EST (GMT-5)
Yeah I do. Usually a lot more.
17 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Tuesday 11/25/03 - 9:49:09 AM EST (GMT-5)
Not sure. Always one though.

17 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Tuesday 11/25/03 - 11:31:49 AM EST (GMT-5)

did you figure this out on your own or is there a credible doctor who would agree with you? there are some doctors who say that one should consume one half their body weight in fluid ounces of water, pure water, daily.

when you drink soda, and juices high in sugar, and coffee and energy drinks and alcahol, all of these things contain ingredients that use up your body's water supply. the water in them is used to carry out the waste they introduced. also, only pure water can be used to rehydrate cells.

Could you be chronically dehydrated ? Many people are and never realize it. Our bodies require at least eight glasses of water per day, more during exercise, illness, and hot weather. People often think that even if they don't actually drink water, they are getting enough by drinking coffee, tea, soft drinks, juice or beer. The truth is that many of these beverages have a diuretic effect, encouraging the body to excrete water through urination, rather than retaining it.

The body is composed of nearly 75% water, and water is required for many of its essential functions. Water is utilized as a solvent. It also provides a means to transport nutrients, hormones and other elements. It is used to produce hydroelectric energy, especially in the brain. It is essential for maintaining cell structure. Water is also necessary to maintain a lower serum viscosity that enables proteins and enzymes to function more efficiently.

Chronic dehydration can lead to a loss or decrease in these functions and may ultimately result in disease or can exacerbate an existing condition.

Unfortunately, on school days, I don't think I drink that much.

I think raisinman has it right. I've also heard that anytime you drink coffee, tea, alcohol, or energy drinks, you should match how much water you drink oz. to oz. in order not to dehydrate yourself.

Also, I'm pretty sure you would have to drink a LOT more than 64 oz. of water to get water intoxication, unless you're just a really small person or some such. I've know a lot of people that drink at least three 20 oz. bottles of water every day, myself included, and I've never heard of any of them getting water intoxication.

Kiki, wikipedia has a good article on water intoxication.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_intox...

I linked directly to the runners part, which was one of your arguments. Runners do need to drink sports drinks more, because they contain sodium and electrolytes necessary so they don't get water intoxication.

I think this article kind of proves both sides of the argument, kiki. Toward the end of the article: "drinking water to rehydrate is much more important than avoiding water intoxication, since the former is extremely common and the latter is rare."

While you have a point with electrolytes, the article makes it clear that staying hydrated is important; it's just that you need to keep a balanced level of electrolytes to water intake.
