MADRID, Spain, July 2 — Scientists in the United States have created hybrid human “she-males,” mixing male and female cells in the same embryo, in a move that has outraged fertility experts and anti-abortionists.

Dr. Norbert Gleicher of the Foundation for Reproductive Medicine in Chicago and a colleague injected male cells into female embryos in research which they believe could lead to better treatments or cures for single gene disorders. But their work provoked revulsion when they presented it to the annual meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Madrid, Spain. “There are very good reasons why this type of research is generally rejected by the international research community,” Dr Francoise Shenfield of ESHRE said. “I cannot conceive of any situation in which this particular technique would be acceptable, and if it cannot be applied there is not much use in experimenting with it,” she added...

Should it be illegal for scientists to create these `she-males`?

well...hermaphrodites are man made anyways...but you know what i mean. scientificly

I think they should think of the person they are creating. How are they going to feel when they get older and don't fit into this Black/white world we live in. Yes I know there are he-shes in todays society but they were and accident. Why would anyone want to knowing place a human life at such great stakes.

TurtleTurtle, you took the words right out of my mouth. What parents would approve of doing this to their son/daughter? Or would they just put the kid into an orphanage? And when he/she gets older finding a mate will be near impossible. Of course this should be illegal!
18 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Friday 7/18/03 - 5:11:19 AM EST (GMT-5)
I soooo think this should be illegal! This is wrong and they should have never done this!
18 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Friday 7/18/03 - 5:49:04 AM EST (GMT-5)
I don't think anyone should be messing around with genes or anything natural like that. It's wrong.
18 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Friday 7/18/03 - 7:57:26 AM EST (GMT-5)
Wait. Is this part of their research to assist in treating genetic disorders, the same way that cloning human embryos for stem cells is? If that's all it is, I can't really see why it's so "revolting." In that case, there wouldn't be hermahprodite orphans running around because they would never develop. If the embryos are raised to be regular old human, she-male children, I then see a problem.

What ohlefty said.
18 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Friday 7/18/03 - 4:48:13 PM EST (GMT-5)
It shouldn't be any more illegal than any other type of cloning or cloning research.
18 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Friday 7/18/03 - 6:21:05 PM EST (GMT-5)
I agree with ohlefty. Definately.
18 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Friday 7/18/03 - 7:27:03 PM EST (GMT-5)
i too agree with ohlefty.
18 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Friday 7/18/03 - 7:35:16 PM EST (GMT-5)
I don't get it. They aren't actually creating she-males to walk around and stuff. Has anyone who is repulsed by this actually read the article?
18 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Wednesday 8/6/03 - 9:06:51 AM EST (GMT-5)
Thats not fiar...
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Monday 11/3/03 - 1:07:27 PM EST (GMT-5)
if it were wrong it wouldnt be possible... ROCK ON SCIENTISTS :P
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Wednesday 11/5/03 - 5:46:29 PM EST (GMT-5)
Well if their research is offensive then thats no reason to go off and find a cure for cancer or something worthless like that when it could piss off thousands and only save millions of lives. Let them do their research and if they find anything from it then let the people who are offended by it not reap the benifits.
18 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Monday 11/10/03 - 6:26:06 PM EST (GMT-5)
It's fine, since they're only creating embryos, not actual children. In my opinion, anyway.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Thursday 8/5/04 - 12:44:32 AM EST (GMT-5)
why would anyone want to do that? thats crazy? I mean, its one thing if you were born that way, but to genetically alter genes like that.... what if one day they try to make actual children.....

....

....

...

that would mean it's possible to clone people..

EEK!

*runs and hides*

17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Thursday 8/5/04 - 1:16:54 AM EST (GMT-5)
Wow, this is a really badly worded question. It's not like they're making clones with the en-gendered embryos.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Thursday 8/5/04 - 1:21:35 AM EST (GMT-5)
I cant wait until they make "super soldiers" who can go and do all of our dirty work for us.

I think that making a she male would be good. They would be able to reproduce all by themselves. Gives a whole new meaning to "Go F*&K yourself.

17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Thursday 8/5/04 - 1:58:50 AM EST (GMT-5)
Do they reproduce asexually? Cause then we have cause to be really worried...
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Thursday 8/5/04 - 3:13:17 AM EST (GMT-5)
ill stick with the trend and agree with ohlefty
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Thursday 8/5/04 - 3:42:45 AM EST (GMT-5)
This army of hermaphrodites will destroy us all!
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Thursday 8/5/04 - 3:51:01 AM EST (GMT-5)
No, they will be our soldier hermaphrodites, they will merely destroy everyone else. Well, except maybe Canada, what would we do without America junior?
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Thursday 8/5/04 - 4:00:20 AM EST (GMT-5)
See, I see this being like Terminator, they turn against us and such.
17 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 8/21/04 - 1:44:53 PM EST (GMT-5)
Oh no! Emotional and/or mythological morality-based knee jerk response! It's different so it must be baaaaad. Screw you people. I'm with naphtha.
