If we treated disabled people equally to everyone else - there would be no special handicapped parking or other allowences for their handicaps. But it is wrong to expect things from a disabled person that he cannot do.

Equally does not mean the same. The handicapped parking allows the disabled to use stores, movies, etc. equally with others. Lifts allow the wheelchair-bound to use raised areas equally. This is fair and right.

I agree with GoMan.
I think this is sort of a paradox and so it could easily trap someone. For example, for a disabled child to get an education equal to his nondisabled peers (thus receiving equal treatment), he'll need some extra help (meaning that he's not being treated equally).

Ask the disabled person. I treat everyone the exact same till I learn that they require special treatment or somebody tells me they do.
But typically, ask the disabled person.

treat them as equals and dont pretend that they're retarded. dont assume anything. As far as what they think, they dont like being babied, or having people stare, thats horrible, but they do need special parking for lifts etc, so *shrugs*

Treated as equals means the same advantages. They each should be able to learn and be independent, and it's not unfair if they get handicap parking spaces or what have you.

Do you mean "equally" as in exactly the same, or "equally" as in as human beings? With all the questions getting rejected for being vague, I'm surprised this got through.

equally as in as human beings.
Meaning should a person recieve special non-physical treatment because they are handicapped.
For example,
a blind person who treats people like sh|t:
Accept it because he has a bum deal and his life sucks.
or
Tell him he's an ass same as you would everyone else.

Of course you'd treat him just like everyone else in that instance.

I've seen lot's of people get special treatment of that sort because of their handicap, and have noticed that people are often ostracized for treating the handicapped just like they would anybody else. Which is why I asked the question.

LOL, guys! A lot of people like to push each other around for child's play. So, I guess it would be alright to push a handicapped person's wheelchair down a hill and race down the hill to catch him or her.... Hmmm... then pull'm out of the wheelchair and wrestle him to the ground. Bittersweet!

It's not right to push anyone down a hill,
Everyone deserves to be treated like a human being regardless of handicaps

Being treaded equally means the negative stuff too though. It sometimes seems they are only allowed to recieve the positive and if you do otherwise, even if they deserve it, you are a monster. I say an non-nice individual is an non-nice individual redaurdless of if he can see/hear/walk and deserves to be treated as such.

No, its this girl at my school and she can't walk. But if you are in her way she would hit you with her wheelchair and wouldn't say sorry. She never hit me with it and that's a good thing because I would have forgot that she couldn't walk for about 5 seconds.

Generally, no. It would suck to be disabled. But the disabled person can't expect to be treated exactly like everyone else.

I want ot be treated the same as everyone else. With respect and understanding. So what I have to use a handycap parking place, I need it cause I can't walk that far without being helped. Not just any handycapped person can use them. You have to be physically disabled. Also people should not take advantage of their diability by demanding better treatment.

As A disabled person, I do like the handicapped parking and things like that. However, I HATE, HATE, HATE it when if I'm in my wheelchair, no one wants to talk to me or if they have to talk to me, they act like I'm deaf and they have to shout or they have to use very small words because, after all, I can't walk right, so that must mean I'm mentally handicapped, right? Sometimes I prefer the people that talk like I'm not there to the ones that think I don't understand them.
