CAMP BUSHMASTER, Iraq - In this dry desert world near Najaf, where the Army V Corps combat support system sprawls across miles of scabrous dust, there's an oasis of sorts: a 500-gallon pool of pristine, cool water. It belongs to Army chaplain Josh Llano of Houston, who sees the water shortage, which has kept thousands of filthy soldiers from bathing for weeks, as an opportunity.

'It's simple. They want water. I have it, as long as they agree to get baptized,' he said. And agree they do. Every day, soldiers take the plunge for the Lord and come up clean for the first time in weeks...

Is this Army chaplain doing anything wrong by giving water only to soldiers who get baptized?

That's not cool IMO.
19 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 4/9/03 - 1:28:16 PM EST (GMT-5)
That is mean. Let's just hope that the water doen not come back for his sake. It would be a long week in the showers, if you know what i mean
19 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 4/9/03 - 1:29:34 PM EST (GMT-5)
That is terrible. In my opinion, God is best served by following Jesus' examples of compassion for one's fellow man, not by adding 'notches to one's belt' by coercing people into baptisms.
19 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 4/9/03 - 1:31:53 PM EST (GMT-5)
Whoa....down here on earth, If your and army chaplin, your priorities should go just like that, army first, religion second.. He should get a dishonorable discharge.
19 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 4/9/03 - 2:21:24 PM EST (GMT-5)
I agree CowDung. Not only is it not following Christ's example, it's depriving soldiers of something they have to have to survive. The chaplain should face military charges for attempting to withhold water from soldiers in who are working in a desert. It's cruel, and we're not even treating POWs that way, or at least, we shouldn't be.
19 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 4/9/03 - 2:24:36 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'm not sure if it's a matter of survival--it's bathing water, not drinking water. (but it still isn't the right thing to do.)
19 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 4/9/03 - 2:26:53 PM EST (GMT-5)
wait a sec, does he actually own this water?if so,he can give it to whoever he wants,no matter how dumb and wrong it is
19 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 4/9/03 - 2:28:22 PM EST (GMT-5)
I doubt that he smuggled it from home in his Army issue canteen...
19 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 4/9/03 - 2:30:16 PM EST (GMT-5)
but the story said it "belonged" to him,why is he in charge of it?
19 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 4/9/03 - 2:30:41 PM EST (GMT-5)
Whoops.... my bad.... I thought it included drinking water in there.
19 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Wednesday 4/9/03 - 6:13:55 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yeah it's just about bathing water. If they want to take a bath, they have to get baptized.
19 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Thursday 4/17/03 - 6:16:34 PM EST (GMT-5)
That's awful! Just another horrible example of religious facism.
19 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Thursday 4/17/03 - 6:18:42 PM EST (GMT-5)
as opposed to eco/feminist facism we see everywhere? i think that it is kind of silly. unless the soldiers believe they are being baptized, it won't really count (in their eyes). thus you don't really achieve much unless they do live by the tenents of the faith. otherwise they're still going to hell. (if you believe that in the first place)
19 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Sunday 4/20/03 - 11:32:29 PM EST (GMT-5)
I think it is. It's like saying, you scratch my back, I scratch yours. In war it's horrible that someone is doing that.
19 yrs ago - Saturday 5/3/03 - 6:36:01 PM EST (GMT-5)
this man is sick! he should maybe encourage people to be baptized and offer the water to the people serving his country!
19 yrs ago - Saturday 5/3/03 - 7:01:29 PM EST (GMT-5)
first of all, I don't think it's right that he's bribing them into getting baptized... then they wouldn't be doin it for the right reasons... and second of all... I think all the soldiers deserve water... he should do the right thing and be kind to all...
19 yrs ago - Saturday 5/3/03 - 7:51:25 PM EST (GMT-5)
That's just rubbish. Pathetic.
19 yrs ago - Saturday 5/3/03 - 8:30:16 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yeah, I'm sure every single one of those soldiers really truly wanted to be baptized, for reasons purely of faith and not at all because they were tired of being really, really dirty. *rolls eyes*
19 yrs ago - Saturday 5/3/03 - 9:14:05 PM EST (GMT-5)
Yeah, that's not a good Christian attitude at all.
18 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Thursday 7/17/03 - 9:59:56 AM EST (GMT-5)
Being a christian myself, I find this unacceptable. It really doesn't belong to him, it belongs to God. I think that this man is being selfish and not a true christian. He is trying to force his belief on someone that may or may not believe. Its like certain religions trying to brain wash you in to believing there way and only there way. You can't force anyone to believe. They either want to or they don;t. In my church, we don't push our beliefs down anyone's throat but if you want to hear about the Lord, we are more than happy to talk to you.
18 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Wednesday 9/24/03 - 9:27:46 AM EST (GMT-5)
That's totally unchristian. I mean, Come on! They're not really getting baptized in their hearts, it's just a waste of water. It's also blackmail. That's not bringing people to Christ, that's being gullible enough to believe dehydrated soldiers who want water and will do anything to get it.
18 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Wednesday 9/24/03 - 9:30:14 AM EST (GMT-5)
If he is in charge of the water he can dole it out as he deems necessary. So the soldiers will mouth some platitudes get a bath and no one gets hurt.
18 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Friday 10/3/03 - 9:27:31 AM EST (GMT-5)
Stupid..just plain stupid.
18 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Friday 10/3/03 - 9:29:32 AM EST (GMT-5)
I'd get the snivelling little f*ck and drown him in the holy water, see how he f*cking likes it and then have a nice bath with his corpse.
18 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Friday 10/3/03 - 9:31:36 AM EST (GMT-5)
That's stupid. He's bribing them, basically. And does he think that just because they're being baptised, they're actually going to follow the religion? They're just humouring him, to get water.
