It sounds as though a vegan diet was the only thing these parents were doing to harm their daughter...I think they had other serious abuse issues going on, if they couldn't even manage to keep her clean and didn't get her medical attention for 15 whole months...

These people sound like kooks. Sounds like they did more than just feed their child a vegan diet. Sounds like they neglected other duties.
Yes, they need to be prosecuted.

The question isn't asking WHETHER or not they should be prosecuted, it's asking HOW.

^^ I meant my earlier post to say "a vegan diet *wasn't* the only thing..."
And to appease Kaneda before he pops a blood vessel, I don't think attempted murder is quite right. Neglect, some sort of aggravated/habitual abuse charge...There have to be varying degrees of chiuld abuse laws to differentiate cases like these.

A vegan diet is not a crime. It's actually quite healthy, even for newborn babies. I have a friend who was a vegan since he was born, and he's perfectly healthy. The only problem I have with that is the "no breast milk" thing. Human breast milk should be fed to human babies. That's what it's there for and it constitutes as a vegan diet. Everything else is fine.

They deserve to be killed. The diet is their excuse for not properly raising and attending to the child appearently. Starve them to death.

Not attempted murder because it doesn't sound like they were trying to kill the baby. It certainly was malnutrition, though. And i guess if you were going for any kind of murder charge it would need to be man slaughter.

Wow, boy does that make all of us vegans look bad. My children will be raised vegetarian, but they sure as hell won't be starved or malnurished.

By vegetarian do you mean vegan? I think raising kids on a veggie diet is okay only if they are allowed dairy or some form of animal protein. Our bodies are meant to eat meat - we need the protein and God has told us He put many animals on the earth to provide for us. Denying a child any food group seems like neglect to me, no matter how good the intentions are.

It's neglect. Our bodies are NOT "meant to eat meat". We are omnivores.
I don't see how denying it breast milk has anything to do with a vegan philosophy.

And most vegans I know are most certainly not christian so your "God has told us He put many animals on the earth to provide for us" is pointless and offensive.

Neglect at least, not only the diet thing - they might not have known better, but for the other dtuff the fingernails, and nappy rash etc.

*Sigh*
1. Hael, The definition of an omnivore is NOT the same as the definition of vegetarian - omnivore means we are meant to eat meat as well as veggies. That DOES mean we are meant to eat meat.
2. Denying a child breast milk DOES have to do with vegans. Vegans don't consume milk, or any animal products. Humans are animals, some wacko vegans like these parents in the story will think that also means human breast milk is bad, but they are (deadly, obviously) wrong.
3. I have a feeling you don't know too many Christians at all, vegan or otherwise. You claim (correctly) that we are omnivores, but then say it's offensive to think we have been provided with meat? I don't think you know what you feel ... and if you are the sociopath you claim to be, you wouldn't find anything offensive. You wouldn't have feelings - that's always confused me about you because you obviously have a lot of feelings.

It means we can survive on either. And we can.
Vegans don't consume dairy products usually because of the way animals are treated on the farms.
What I said was offensive was your stupid argument that animals were put on the earth for humans. And I said it was offensive to vegans I know, not me.
Haha! I don't know many christians? That's funny, considering I go to two churches and a christian school.

Vegan diets are not good for babies. They need milk products.

Then you must have as miserable a life as I've always assumed by the way you talk - if you are offended by hearing about something in the Bible going to a Christian school must be torture for you!

I sort of enjoy going to a catholic school (I am not sure how this thread got on this topic). I love challenging people on their religion.

Vegans avoid milk, eggs, meat and a number of other 'toxic' foodstuffs. I'm not sure which ones specifically, some nuts and beans or something like that.
Ovolactovegetarians avoid milk,eggs, and meat.
Lactovegetarians avoid milk and mean, ovovegetarians avoid eggs and meat.
There are a couple of other subdefinitions but I don't have enough information on the topic.
