No, because it is still very safe since it makes it more difficult for some one to break into your house.

My house has nice decorative bars on the window that came with the house. 2 of the windows don't have them in case of a fire. Having bars on the window is quite nice, you can leave your windows open all the time.

Illegal is a bit extreme. Unfortunately, bars are a necessity in many places due to high crime rates.

You can get rid of the bars once you get rid of the people who want to break into houses.

This was what made me think of it, this week a whole family in I think Chicago died, because their front door was too close to the fire, and all their windows had bars. Firefighters were trying to pry the bars off but they didn't make it in time

Why don't we just make it illegal to catch your house on fire?

The bars should be easily disassembled from the inside. Don't ask me how.

Having bars on your windows is a must have for every home when you live in South Central L.A.

Yes, this is a pet peeve of mine. They are so dangerous! I rent my house and when we moved in I made sure the landlord removed all the bars from the windows. We live in a relatively safe place anyway, and the bars are mainly to stop the monkeys coming in if you have the windows open...yes, I said monkeys!

I think that there should be some way to take them off from the inside of the house in case of an emergency (if that could even be possible).

Great question! I think it is sad that someone has died due to having bars on their windows, but sometimes they are necessary...I think a good solution to that is wooden ones or something to that effect, where they can be taken out if necessary...I do think bars should stay though. Maybe not on upper levels though.

I think houses w/ bars on windows look like jailhouses.
They have bars that you can open from the inside however, I think those would be wayyyy less dangerous in case of a fire.

From my understanding it is against houseing ordinances in most states to put bars on windows of houses built after a certain date (in Florida is 1991) because of the fire hazzards. Here if you redo the exterior (painting, you need a permit) you have to install the new type which has an opening mechanism. Just FYI.

I like the look on Southwestern homes, but illegal is a bit too extreme for it. Educating homeowners about not being able to escape in advance is a good idea, though. That way they can remove the bars if they are too concerned.

There are window grates that have hinges, specifically for fire escapes.

^ But can't the robbers/murderers/crime commiters open the hingers?

^ You don't open a hinge. Your door has a hinge, why don't the burglars open that? It'd be locked, obviously. Someone has taken a patent out for an electronic system of burglar bars linked to a smoke alarm, so in case of fire, they all swing open.

Not for private homeowners... Landlords, though, there might be some need for addressing the issue.
