This is JUST like the 50s and 60s when they told people going under a table would save them in the event of a nuclear attack. Do you think the government really believes the majority of us will believe this information?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. says people should cover their mouths with a cloth and wash their hands to cut down on further contamination from a chemical, biological or nuclear attack. The latest recommendation came in an information bulletin from the FBI's National Infrastructure Protection Center warning of the threat from al Qaeda of a possible mass-casualty chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear attack.

The bulletin, dated Feb. 12 and posted on its Web site http:/www.nipc.gov/publications/infobulletins/2003/ib03-003.htm also recommended 'basic countermeasures.'

'Most (chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear) threats represent an inhalation or contact hazard,' according to the bulletin. 'To minimize further contamination, individuals who come in contact with an unusual substance should cover their mouths with a cloth while leaving the area, avoid touching surfaces, and wash their hands thoroughly...'

Do you think if there is a chemical or biological attack, that washing your hands and covering your mouth will be enough to save you?

I just read this and I'm stunned. Maybe I'm totally wrong, but how will duct tape and hand washing help against a biological attack?

I think I would take really deep breaths. I would rather die in a few minutes than drag it out for a few hours. Or however long it'd take.

I believe everything my leaders tell me. Seriously, it is a throwback to the 50's...

This reminded me on how the government used to tell the soldiers who participated the nuclear bomb testings: don't breath in ratioactive material.

Duct tape from Ace Hardware will save you from anything... or so our government claims.

LOL that's insane. But I do think duct tape fixes anything...that and WD 40. But no, thats silly. Whatever makes you feel better, though.

with the tape your suppse to seal your doors and windows shut.... so no air boirne things can getinto your house... so you cant get out.... to get food or water and you'll die anyway.... anyway by the time you duct the whole house you'll be dead anyway

It comforts people to to something, even if it is useless. But if air can get through the cloth, so can pathogens and poisons. If the problem area is VERY local, getting away and washing hands (and body and cloths) might do some good. Even then, probably useless.

No way man.

In the 60's, we use to say, "Get under your desk, bend over, and kiss your ass goodbye."

Depends on the chemical or biological attack...

Yes, as I have already said on another post, I enjoy posting on stuff I know nothing about.

17 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Wednesday 1/12/05 - 1:45:53 PM EST (GMT-5)
It'll help but I think the effect would probably be worst than just needing to cover your mouth.
17 yrs ago - Monday 5/2/05 - 11:19:19 AM EST (GMT-5)
it would barely even help
16 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Tuesday 5/31/05 - 6:47:12 AM EST (GMT-5)

16 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Tuesday 5/31/05 - 6:49:18 AM EST (GMT-5)
Is that a true and serious article or is somebody just pulling your leg?
16 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Sunday 6/19/05 - 9:44:44 AM EST (GMT-5)

16 yrs ago, 10 mos ago - Tuesday 6/21/05 - 5:04:45 PM EST (GMT-5)
