SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australia's first cloned sheep has died despite being in apparent good health, but any chance of getting to the root of the mysterious death was lost when its decomposing carcass was cremated.

The cremation of the merino ewe 'Matilda' raised eyebrows among opponents of cloning and gene technology, who lamented that there would be no further opportunity to establish what happened...

Do you think Matilda the cloned sheep died from something scientists don`t want the public to know about, and that`s why they cremated her body before the cause of death was officially found?

Even more interesting now that Dolly is dead - at least they are planning an autopsy on this sheep but so far they are saying she died of premature aging. Poor Dolly

Yah, I heard Dolly had extremely bad arthritis.

It doesn't seem at all unlikely.

why must people clone things?? aren't there enough people and other things on this earth already?? what do we need more for?? it's just not natural.

I don't know, but I really like that photo up there. Aren't sheep born wearing sweaters?
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 4/2/03 - 12:06:05 PM EST (GMT-5)
the main purpose for cloning is for replacement body parts. stem cell research.

Uptown: At the moment it is, but it has extrememly dangerous potential.

19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 4/2/03 - 2:02:25 PM EST (GMT-5)
^^ I know...What other sheep has the luxury of getting her wool shampooed and styled like that, and then getting a nice cozy sweater to wear (probably made out of some other sheep's wool)...
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 4/2/03 - 2:04:14 PM EST (GMT-5)
stem cell research is wrong also, its still playing god...not cool...if you have a messed up organ, then its meant to be, just let it go
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 4/2/03 - 2:06:01 PM EST (GMT-5)
Since when did God start cloning sheep and researching stem cells?
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 4/2/03 - 2:06:33 PM EST (GMT-5)
Roach, that's easy enough to say if you're healthy... If I'm misjudging and you do have a failing heart, but you just don't want to disrupt nature by attempting to save yourself, please correct me.
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 4/2/03 - 2:06:41 PM EST (GMT-5)
I'm glad to see we have so many of God's spokespeople on this site.
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 4/2/03 - 2:09:55 PM EST (GMT-5)
what? its wrong to just grow stuff to help other people...its not natural and it shouldnt be. if someone is dying, its meant to be. its my belief that everything that happens, even the smallest most insignificant occurances, is meant to be. we are all driven by fate.
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 4/2/03 - 2:14:55 PM EST (GMT-5)
I want to hear you tell that to your kid ten years from now, when he's dying from a failing liver...
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 4/2/03 - 2:15:53 PM EST (GMT-5)
"its wrong to just grow stuff to help other people" - Sorry, but in my belief system it is not wrong to help other people. "its not natural and it shouldnt be" - What is not natural about a change in biology? There is nothing more natural than changes in biology, that's why we're not still swinging in the trees. "if someone is dying, its meant to be." - So, you're not going to take advantage of any modern medicine? "we are all driven by fate." - No, I'm not driven by some mystical force. I am driven by logic and reason. Belief in fate is pseudoscience.
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 4/2/03 - 2:19:43 PM EST (GMT-5)
yea well, thats youre belief and i respect that...and if my kid was dying of a failing liver, i would be heart broken and i would try every medication possible...but i sure as hell would not resort to stem cell research.
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 4/2/03 - 2:20:44 PM EST (GMT-5)
because...?
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 4/2/03 - 2:24:41 PM EST (GMT-5)
because what? not resort to stem cell research? its the begining of a downward spiral. you have to look at the bigger picture to get an intelligent look at the outcome of this 15-30 years down the road.
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 4/2/03 - 2:26:01 PM EST (GMT-5)
roach: you're going to have to go into more detail than that I'm afraid, that was a nifty avoidance of the question.
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 4/2/03 - 2:26:23 PM EST (GMT-5)
And since you can see 15-30 years down the road, please enlighten me. When you say "a downward spiral", a downward spiral of curing diseases that have killed millions of people throughout history? That doesn't exactly sound like a downward spiral.
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 4/2/03 - 2:26:39 PM EST (GMT-5)
One question, stem cells can only be taken from aborted foetuses right?
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 4/2/03 - 2:30:05 PM EST (GMT-5)
i mean a downward spiral of the human species. thru our own actions, we will eventually kill ourselves because all these people just look at what technology can do for them now...they never step back and say, "what am i doing!?" ie...the atom bomb...sure, it helped win the war and save many Americans from being slaughterd upon invading the japan mainland...but now nuclear technology can slip into the wrong hands. Kaneda - yea, thats right
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Wednesday 4/2/03 - 2:34:41 PM EST (GMT-5)
No, that's not right. Stem cells can be taken from adults eventually. And the stems cells are now taken from human fetuses that aren't necessarily a product of an abortion. They are often a product of a miscaraige. Now, how the hell does curing diseases relate to weapons of mass destruction?
