The Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday that it is trying to track down as many as 386 piglets that might have been genetically engineered and wrongfully sold into the U.S. food supply. The focus of the FDA investigation are pigs raised by researchers at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. They engineered the animals with two genes: One is a cow gene that increases milk production in the sow. The other, a synthetic gene, makes the milk easier for piglets to digest. The goal was to raise bigger pigs faster. There has been no evidence that either genetically altered plants or animals trigger human illness, but critics warn that potential side effects remain unknown. FDA rules require even the offspring of genetically engineered animals to be destroyed so they don't get into the food supply...

Would you sue the Food and Drug Administration and/or the University of Illinois if you found out you had eaten one of these genetically engineered pigs that somehow entered the U.S. food supply?

I don't buy pork, or pork products, but I wouldn't care if I did. They keep saying that altered food hasn't been found to be harmful, but people keep carrying on about it. I don't even understand what the worst-case scenario is. I don't think anyone in the public does.

I don't eat pork, this isn't an issue for me. But yes I would if it did. That's the American way baby.

19 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Sunday 3/2/03 - 7:28:20 PM EST (GMT-5)
i wouldn't care if i did eat one of the pigs but i would probably sue anyways just because i'd most likely win the law suit

i would feel sorry for the pigs. but i'm a vegetarian, so that might explain it.

Unless I'm hurt by it, there would be no reason to sue...

As long as it didn't hurt me, I wouldn't have a problem with it. I really don't understand what the big deal is--farmers have been doing their own 'genetic engineering' by crossing different varieties of plants and animals. This has been going on almost since man started cultivating food.
19 yrs ago - Monday 5/5/03 - 9:53:47 AM EST (GMT-5)
no, it doesn't sound dangerous and i am not a sue happy person....but i know a few.....
19 yrs ago - Monday 5/5/03 - 10:02:30 AM EST (GMT-5)
No, or else I'd sue the makers of aspartame. GE food is not a big bad devil, GE is responsible for creating the higher-yield, insect resistant foods that we need to support a large population. I'd rather eat GE foods that something that was treated with copper sulphate insecticide (level 1), or live through the equivalent of the Irish potato blight.

How would I know if I ate one of these pigs? I usually don't do extensive testing on the food I eat. I don't eat pork, but I do notice that pork sold in stores is cut up meat and it would be pretty hard to tell if it was genetically altered. The only way I would know if a great stink or outcry arose about it and that it was determined eating of the altered pig would cause early death. Then I would sue.
17 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Thursday 1/27/05 - 8:35:35 PM EST (GMT-5)
it isn't the school's fault. i wouldn't be inclined to sue anyone really...i think i'd actually prefer that i had one of the pigs just to see exactly what technique they used to make it.
17 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Friday 1/28/05 - 4:26:55 AM EST (GMT-5)
i would, if i had noticeable and extreme side effects that i could link to eating the pork. without either of those, i wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

the univeristy for selling them and maybe the food and drug adminastion if they knew
17 yrs ago - Friday 5/13/05 - 1:38:16 AM EST (GMT-5)
We eat genetically engineered foods everyday in America. 70% of our processed foods contain genetically modified ingredients. If it doesn't hurt you, it doesn't matter.
