I thought I knew, but after I read the story, I decided I don't know. Generally, to me, it's night when it gets dark and it's day when I get up to go to work or to go somewhere anytime after, say, 5 a.m. If I get up at 3 a.m., I consider that it's still nighttime.

I think night starts at sunsets, and ends at 12 am. Maybe that would explain it at least...

A 24 hr period is often divided into 2 when we say night and day, but into 3 when we say good morning, good afternoon and goodnight so there are bound to be parallaxes.
3am is certainly night but it is in the morning section.

We say good morning because good night has become associated with good bye/go to sleep.

from from midnight to noon it's "good morning", from noon to 8 pm it's "good afternoon", and from 8 to midnight again, its "good evening". That's the way it is in spanish, anyway.
