Should China try to clone pandas so they don`t go extinct?

I suppose that since it was human intervention that kicked off their move toward extinction, it's only proper that human intervention could restore the species.

I'm all for raising the population of pandas but not through cloning.
19 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Thursday 3/20/03 - 12:25:45 PM EST (GMT-5)
they could try, but the latest killing of Dolly doesn't bode well for any attempts of clonage.

yes b/c they are sooo cute!!

only if it works right tho

Oh who cares. Chickens and Cows are cute too.

Perhaps they should try giving them Viagara before resorting to cloning...

Why would the put a panda fetus in a cat? Wouldn't something larger be more appropriate if it worked?
19 yrs ago - Wednesday 5/21/03 - 9:13:47 AM EST (GMT-5)
Baby pandas are about the size of a large kitten when born. It's all about relative size.
19 yrs ago - Wednesday 5/21/03 - 9:17:14 AM EST (GMT-5)
I knew they were small, but I'd forgotten that they were quite that small.

One of the laws of nature says the animals that cannot adapt to changes in their environment will go extinct. If Pandas go extinct it would be natural for them to do so. Nobody gets all weepy about T-Rex being extinct.
19 yrs ago - Wednesday 5/21/03 - 9:24:54 AM EST (GMT-5)
That's because a T-rex will eat you, and a panda is a cute fuzzy non-carnivorous animal.
19 yrs ago - Wednesday 5/21/03 - 9:44:58 AM EST (GMT-5)
Panda's are cute, but they aren't like the teddy bears we give our kids. They aren't kept behind bars in the zoo to protect them from us. They would attack and do real damage to a person.
19 yrs ago - Wednesday 5/21/03 - 11:04:31 AM EST (GMT-5)
GoMan, the problem with that your statement that extinction is natural is this: chances are very high that pandas would still be thriving today if it wasn't for humans killing them and building over their habitats. Some species do die out naturally, and that's one thing. But most of the species we have near extinction right now are endangered because of stuff we have done. It's now our responsibility to try to fix that.
19 yrs ago - Wednesday 5/21/03 - 11:16:03 AM EST (GMT-5)
No, they should clone them because CLONING IS FUN!!!!
19 yrs ago - Thursday 5/22/03 - 9:16:58 AM EST (GMT-5)
I'm torn I'm for helping endangered but I'm not for cloning.
19 yrs ago - Thursday 5/22/03 - 9:22:20 AM EST (GMT-5)
after the problems of Dolly, no.
19 yrs ago - Saturday 5/24/03 - 1:38:46 PM EST (GMT-5)
GoManGo: I know, but tell that to the people who go around spraying fur coats. Ermine are wild animals that will attempt to take your fingers off if they're not raised as pets. Same with tiger pelts, fox furs, etc.

I'm not sure if cloning would prevent them going extinct. They'd end up being massively inbred.
18 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 8/23/03 - 7:00:48 PM EST (GMT-5)
I just hope they can do SOMETHING. Its really sad because panda's have a real hard time mating. A female can get pregnant only like once in a year and only if the male shows interest. But the thing is, pandas dont like mating unless they are in the wild. So scientist tried inserting the sperm in the female through an operation. That didnt work either. I dont know if cloning is going to work. They dont have it perfectly understood and under control. Poor those pandas. But its really our fault. We are the ones who hunted and destroyed their enviroment. The real sad thing is, no matter how many times it happens, us humans always realize we need to stop something whenever its too late. Truly sad.

It's not JUST humans in this case. They're eating bamboo for some reason, which isn't sustaining them very well at all.
18 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 8/24/03 - 7:29:47 AM EST (GMT-5)
Are you trying to be ironic, ohlefty?
What problems with Dolly, neon? That she wasn't immortal? That she destroyed sheep morale?
18 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 8/24/03 - 7:33:11 AM EST (GMT-5)
they think that dolly died because of some kind of genetic disorder. i dont know the details of it, but they think the cloning of the sheep created problems with its health. sorry for the utter vagueness, but its all i know!
18 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 8/24/03 - 7:35:47 AM EST (GMT-5)
She died from arthritis at a very early age.
18 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Sunday 8/24/03 - 7:36:56 AM EST (GMT-5)
Given the choice between allowing something to go extinct and working with the imperfections of cloning, I'd go with the latter.
