La. Ponders Dead Voter Absentee Ballots

BATON ROUGE, La. - In a state infamous for political chicanery it has become a well-worn joke: Even the dead can vote in Louisiana. The new punchline: Soon, it may even be legal — at least in a few rare cases. 

A Louisiana law in effect at least since 1921 says if a person casts an absentee ballot, then dies before election day, the vote doesn't count. State Sen. Reggie Dupre says that isn't fair. 'If someone casts a ballot, whether at the polls or absentee, their vote should count,' he said Thursday. After all, he added, if someone has a heart attack walking out of the voting booth on Election Day, that vote counts...

Should the state of Louisiana pass this law saying absentee ballots from the deceased can be counted as a vote?

I don't know why it should count. I dead person wouldn't be influenced by whoever comes into office or anything.

I'll play the Devil's Advocate. :) I think that they should be counted, because if they wanted person X to win, more power to them. So what if they're dead. Just because they kicked the bucket right after they sent the ballot in, doesn't mean they should go through and delete that one.

kikiPeepers, I applaud you for your informative, thought-provoking, and insightful questions. *pats on back* As for this issue, the vote is cast and it should stay that way. I doubt enough people will die after voting as to sway the vote in their favor anyway.
