I highly doubt it. Teenagers have some of the most disposable income out there right now. While others are tightening their budgets, teens still have no expenses for the most part, so they can buy whatever they want, be it cigarettes or movie tickets or video games or whatever.

I'd say it's just more of a combination of the taxes and people speaking more openly about the health risks of smoking. It doesn't seem as much of a 'fad' now as it did at once.

No, we just got smarter
19 yrs ago, 3 mos ago - Wednesday 2/26/03 - 4:58:05 PM EST (GMT-5)
Not really because the taxes in New Hampshire are not nearly what they are here in New York. And kids are still puffing away anyway.

I don't think that the price is what caused the decrease. 14 cents more a pack would harldy phase even a 7th grader.
19 yrs ago, 2 mos ago - Saturday 3/15/03 - 10:11:10 AM EST (GMT-5)
wow cigarettes are like $10 here but i don't think the price increase is the sole casue of the decrease.. there were probably a number of variables and the fact that they went up in price was only a minor thing

well why else would it?
19 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Tuesday 4/8/03 - 3:44:57 PM EST (GMT-5)
i bet it's partly due to the crackdown on selling to underage people. the store owners are afraid of the huge fines.
19 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Thursday 4/10/03 - 11:39:45 AM EST (GMT-5)
I would say probably.
17 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Tuesday 11/16/04 - 9:15:02 PM EST (GMT-5)
yes. a lot of my friends have stopped smoking. theyre just too broke to carry on. either that, or theyre incredibly cheap because they dont have money to throw out the window.

as for me, i'd rather put that 3 bucks to use going towards a new cd

17 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Tuesday 11/16/04 - 9:18:26 PM EST (GMT-5)
Possibly but I also think it's because kids are more informed about the dangers of smoking these days.
17 yrs ago, 6 mos ago - Friday 11/19/04 - 2:47:47 PM EST (GMT-5)
Why don't they triple the cost of alcohol, maybe they will quit drinking. Maybe all the people will quit drinking. You can't have penaltys for one vise and not for another. Kids know the dangers of smoking and some don't care about them.

17 yrs ago - Monday 5/9/05 - 10:49:12 AM EST (GMT-5)
It's not taxes, it's just kids these days are a bunch of pussies.
17 yrs ago - Thursday 5/19/05 - 7:31:22 PM EST (GMT-5)
Probably, we DEFINITELY didn't get any smarter.

16 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Sunday 6/5/05 - 2:25:09 PM EST (GMT-5)
It can't of been encouraging. I doubt it's the main reason for the decline, there's things like education, and how it's becoming less socially acceptable to smoke too, but the increase in price must of had some effect.
16 yrs ago, 11 mos ago - Sunday 6/5/05 - 2:25:57 PM EST (GMT-5)
No. education is.
