WHITE CLOUD, Mich. (AP) - A member of an American Indian tribe said the court system is infringing on his religious freedom by prohibiting his 4-year-old son from being given peyote, a hallucinogenic plant, during spiritual ceremonies.

Jonathan Fowler, 35, of Traverse City, testified about his son Friday at a Newaygo County Family Court hearing stemming from a custody dispute with his ex-wife, Kristin Hanslovsky, 31, of Montague.

Fowler, a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, attends an Indian church where peyote use is considered a sacrament. He wants to be able to give peyote to his son during his church's religious services.

Hanslovsky objects, saying it could harm the child.....

It apparently has a long history use use without harm. I feel like the father should be able to school his child in their tribes tradition.

But does have to *give* him drugs to teach him of his tribes traditions? I think not.
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Tuesday 11/26/02 - 9:46:24 AM EST (GMT-5)
Well if the traditions involve them then yes.
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Tuesday 11/26/02 - 9:46:26 AM EST (GMT-5)

19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Tuesday 11/26/02 - 10:07:27 AM EST (GMT-5)
of course he should, he's native American, and that's above the law in the United States.... he should be able to do anything he wants, since settlers invaded his land 500 years ago, that gives him full right to give his child psychedelic drugs, sh*t, he should be able to sacrifice him if he needs to, he's Native American for christ's sake, and they are the chosen people... and anyone who says different is racist... because this is a close minded site and no contrary opinions are tolerated...
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Tuesday 11/26/02 - 10:12:35 AM EST (GMT-5)

19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Tuesday 11/26/02 - 10:28:17 AM EST (GMT-5)
the words 'the land of the free' don't apply to drugging your children. Sorry shade, get a new argument. And they don't actually serve wine at communion, just grape juice. :P

theres nothing wrong with giving ur son a harmless drug once, its not like hes doing it just to trip him out
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Tuesday 11/26/02 - 10:58:41 AM EST (GMT-5)
dude, Peyote is NOT harmless. ive had several friends hospitalized because of the high amounts of mescaline in their bodies.
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Tuesday 11/26/02 - 11:01:29 AM EST (GMT-5)
just because your freinds are idiots and took too much doesnt mean this guy shouldn't be able to give his son a small amount
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Tuesday 11/26/02 - 11:04:15 AM EST (GMT-5)
thats not my point, my point is that you said it was harmless and it clearly isnt a harmless drug.
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Tuesday 11/26/02 - 11:06:12 AM EST (GMT-5)
well nothing is totally harmless, too much of anything will kill you
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Tuesday 11/26/02 - 11:18:17 AM EST (GMT-5)
I'd say prohibiting religious tradition is a clear breach of freedom, and why the hell do they serve grape juice?
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Tuesday 11/26/02 - 11:19:39 AM EST (GMT-5)
peyote is a hallucinogenic drug... would you let your five year old take a drag off a cig just because it wouldn't hurt him? come on man... unless you are a superhero or Native American, there's no reason you should feed illicit drugs to your kids, even in small doses... unless you are Native American... because they are privileged...
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Tuesday 11/26/02 - 11:20:59 AM EST (GMT-5)

19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Tuesday 11/26/02 - 11:29:50 AM EST (GMT-5)
well, usually you dont comment on politics... if you want to talk with the adults elevate yourself by not telling someone to "shut the f*ck up" when you dissagree with their point of view... otherwise, run along and cry to someone who cares in journals...
19 yrs ago, 5 mos ago - Tuesday 11/26/02 - 11:31:39 AM EST (GMT-5)
