It is not the petrol liquid that burns, but the vapour. Here they won't even unlock the pump if you are using a cell phone, because a spark from it could ignite as you are filling your tank.

i used to do that at work..i'd smoke while filling cars up at the car rental place i worked..didn't work the gas pumps there much..fortunately..

They have signs saying turn off the ignition because of the risk of a fire or explosion. Shouldn't that also transfer over to cigs?

Nope, I never have. I HAVE smoked a cigarette in my car while somebody else was pumping the gas, though. But I never flicked any ashes out the window or anything.

![I've been guilty of smoking while the tank is filling, but I stay in the car and use the ashtray until I've pulled away from the gas station...after reading this I may not even do that...!

NORTHWEST SIDE -- A Humboldt Park man died Thursday of burns suffered when his clothes caught fire while he was pumping gas with a lit cigarette.
David Gerena, 40, who suffered burns over 90 percent of his body, was pronounced dead Thursday at Cook County Hospital.
Gerena was pumping gas at a station at 2800 W. Fullerton Ave. Wednesday morning when his cigarette ignited gas vapors and his clothing caught fire.
