Would you ever take a job at an inner-city school known for poverty, gang problems and/or violence?

AFTER 25 years as a teacher, Kevin Bain can`t wait to grab a parachute and bail out of the system.
`It`s a shame, because I love the profession, but when you are physically scared, it`s time to go,` Bain said.
Bain is one of seven deans at Norman Thomas HS on East 33rd Street in Manhattan. `I have five years to go and I`m out of here. If there was a buyout tomorrow, just about all these teachers would quit,` he said.
Student Jennifer Falco, 16, can`t wait to move on to college. `It seems that everyone is scared of these students. Really, a lot of them are very violent.`
For crying out loud, whatever happened to reform school?....
It'd be a tough choice. A lot of these kids need great teachers who care about them and their subjects. I'd want to be able to provide that kind of passion for learning to them that they probably don't get very often. At the same time, I've seen two different friends get burnt out on teaching because their first jobs were in the inner city and it was so tough on them, since the teachers, students, and parents just don't seem to care.
This is a scary topic for me, because I want to be a public defender, and obviously the accused can be a little scary. To be represented by a PD you have to be charged with a crime and be poor. That can make for a scary combination. I want to be idealistic about it, like the teachers in movies, but it's probably going to be a little scary.
I don't know if I'd be worried about burning out as much as I would be worried about being shot or something. But then again I guess you could be killed anywhere, if it's going to happen, it's going to happen. And the rewards of that job would be SO awesome if you did well - look at Mr. Clark in Lean on Me, he completely changed that school around. Inspiring ... but still it's a daunting thought knowing the odds are most people wouldn't be able to do what he did. Or Michelle Pfieffer in Dangerous Minds :P
