Yeah I do. For example, when I'm watching a movie with somebody about a boy and his dog getting lost and almost dying or something, the other person is crying because of the boy and I'm crying because of the dog.

Yes, I think we probably are desensitized by what we see every day. Also, there is the idea of the expanding circle (Singer) which says that we will always care most about ourselves, then our family and friends, caring less and less as the victim moves further away from us. Although this sounds rather cold, I think it is human nature to put ourselves first, and also our brains cannot cope with putting everyone in an equal place, so we order them according to how easily we relate to them. If we are simply told "A man was murdered" it is easy to put him in a de-personalised box called "Other" rather than even identifying him as a human being.
This happens too with animals, but I guess there is always the thought at the back of one's mind that the human was in some way responsible for what happened (even if only by being a fellow human), whereas with animals and young children, they are usually the weaker and far more innocent party and so gain our sympathy like adult

I love dogs and other animals, usually I get more upset about those, especially if it's a human cause. I know humans are animals too. I just don't get too upset about humans.

I feel worse about animals, I think it's because humans can generally understand what's going on but an animal rarely can, especially if it's being abused.

It's packaging. Get some sombre-voiced actor to do the voice-over and play a violin and I'll have to fight back tears about a chocolate Easter bunny having his head bit off.
Humans are more important than animals.

I get upset if it's a child being killed, but beyond that I usually just feel indifferent. On the other hand, I hate animals. I can't stand the kind of people who be upset with me for kicking a dog that was trying to bite me.
