Spike Lee to be Honored in Britain

LONDON (AP) - The British film academy is to honor American movie director Spike Lee on Thursday as 'one of the most influential and important directors of our time.' 

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts said Tuesday that Lee, director of 'She's Gotta Have It' and 'Do the Right Thing,' will be given a Special Award and be interviewed before an audience of academy members by playwright and critic Bonnie Greer. 

'Spike Lee is inspiring to a generation of filmmakers,' the academy said, adding that 'Lee has established himself as one of the most influential and important filmmakers of our time.'

LONDON (AP) - The British film academy is to honor American movie director Spike Lee on Thursday as `one of the most influential and important directors of our time.`

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts said Tuesday that Lee, director of `She`s Gotta Have It` and `Do the Right Thing,` will be given a Special Award and be interviewed before an audience of academy members by playwright and critic Bonnie Greer.

He's a very good filmmaker, but he's nowhere near the level of a Kubrick or Scorsese, not even a Spielberg.

I think he ranks below Kubrick, but definitely not below Spielberg...At least his films have a social side to them, and he's artistically creative & can be credited with portraying a side of American society that hadn't gotten much play before him. I vote yes.

I like most of his movies, even if they are racist towards white people. But I wouldn't say he's the most influential director of our time - that would go to Speilberg

I often disagree with his message or just don't get it, but he makes you think, and he is definitely *one* of the most influential and important directors of this time.

i think spike lee is one of the most obnoxious people in the freakin world, but he is a damn good director. The movie 25th hour was great. and as UncleLaughie said, i often disagree with his messages but he does his job with finesse
