For-Sale Sign Sparks Controversy In Neighborhood
Thu Oct 3, 1:22 PM ET

LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. -- A for-sale sign in the front of a Lee's Summit home is drawing attention for what was printed on it.

A neighbor told KMBC's Kris Ketz that he was shocked when he saw the sign offering a home on Northeast Bristol Place to blacks only.

Ketz reported that Jo Anna Ray had a for-sale sign in her front yard Tuesday that read, 'To Blacks Only. For Sale By Owner.'

Neighbor Joe Nastasio took a picture of the sign.

'I was a little offended for black people as well as white that it was discriminatory toward anyone. I have no problem with anyone living in this neighborhood,' Nastasio said.

Ray told Ketz that the sign was legal. But officials with the U.S. Housing and Urban Development Office in Kansas City, Kan., said that it was not. Officials said that the federal Fair-Housing Act prohibits housing discrimination based on race, color, or national origin.

Ray's told Ketz that she showed her house recently to a black person, and neighbors became upset.

'The whole area was upset because I showed my house to a black person,' Ray said.

'The whole area being who?' Ketz asked.

'Neighbors all the way around,' Ray responded.

'According to one of your neighbors, it's not a problem.' Ketz said.

'Which neighbor is that?' Ray asked.

'The one we just talked to,' Ketz said.

'He's the problem, hon,' Ray said.

Nastasio told Ketz that Ray apparently sent his wife a letter pledging to sell her house only to blacks. 'The more chocolate, the better,' the letter read.

'It further clarified the fact that she intended that having blacks move into the neighborhood was going to do damage to the neighborhood. I don't feel that way,' Nastasio said.

Ketz reported that Ray's for-sale sign changed recently to read, 'Blacks Welcome.'

Lee's Summit police were at the house for a time on Wednesday talking to Ray. Police would not say why they were t Question Who's Online | Find Members | Private Messages

I would. Its almost as though you are inviting racism to divide the community.

I know I can't believe so many people would be okay with that. I'd be pissed off if I saw a sign saying 'Blacks only' in my neighborhood. Or 'Whites Only' for that matter.

id like to see that! in my community, there is only about a 0.5% ethnic population, so more different coloured/race-d people coming and living here would hopefully promote more acceptance of the different. then again, it may cause some people to get out the old lynching uniforms... perhaps not...

little miss, don't be so ignorant... We're talking about a black that wants to turn the community into a black (or "chocolate") one; They're not trying to promote diversity like you claim to be. I, however, wouldn't be offended by this sign. Knowing me I'd probably find some way to turn this into a prank... - Lizzie

Um, I don't know.

Here in the south, many people will leave their neighborhood as soon as one or two black families move in, it's known as "White Flight". In a few short years, a neighborhood will turn all black, and stay that way. Graceland (in an area called Whitehaven, (is that not the most racist neighborhood name ever?) and yes, I am talking about Elvis' house) is now in an exclusivly black area. There is nothing white about Whitehaven anymore.. No whites will move there. There are all these huge expensive house, houses worth over $400,000, that sell for less than $200,000. The only people that you see white are there because of the tourism.

Sad

I don't have time to be offended by stupidity anymore. But it is amazing how racism against whites and asians is more acceptable in American culture than racism against blacks or latinos.

Anti-descrimination works (or should work) for blacks, whites, Asians, everybody. If you can't put 'whites only' then you can't put 'blacks only'. That's how I see it anyway.
