As written, the expression is ambiguous.

It's sad that so many people are incapable of properly applying such simple rules of mathematics.

I think its more that most people never need to use these math rules in everyday lives and forgot them as they (including me) forgot who was buried in Grant's tomb.

^^You really don't remember the order of operations? I feel like middle and high schools do a really good job of pounding those pneumonics into our brains.

What if the question was put 6÷2*(1+2). Would you still get the same answer?

The equation is not relevant for probably 99% of the people. Yes, I remember this but Im a dork majoring in finance. Its kind of like asking someone to diagram a sentence. I no see da purpose for that.

BODMAS is part of the small chunk of math I remember from school.
6÷2 (1+2) brackets first so 6÷2 (3)
6÷2 (3) then devision so 6÷2 =3(3)
3(3) multiply so 3x3 is 9.

the multiplication and the division have equal precedence at 6/2(3)

multiplication is division.
dividing by a number is the same as multiplying by a fraction.

NEGATIVE NUMBERS ARE ENTIRELY DIFFERENT THAN POSITIVE NUMBERS. LIKE PERFECTLY OPPOSITE.

6 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Saturday 1/2/16 - 5:16:11 PM EST (GMT-5)
IF THEY ARE OPPOSITE THEN THEY ARE NOT THE SAME.
THEREFORE SUBTRACTION IS NOT THE SAME AS ADDITION.
MULTIPLICATION IS NOT THE SAME AS DIVISION.
can we stop shouting now???
