They are neccesary to fill a demand in the marketplace, or they wouldn't be manufacturing them.
The Impala is a mid-size sedan, not a large car.
For those who think a car is not neccesary, have you ever been to a rural area? I live in a rural area, nad I have to be to work at 10PM, living 10 miles away. Do you suppose I walk? Ride a bike? It gets pretty cold here in the winter, and riding a bike would be pretty unsafe. Unless one lives in an urban area with a good transportation system, a car is a neccesary evil it today's world, and if one has a family, a larger car is the only way to go.

Personally I don't like large cars, but I see why some people would want one. Sometimes my family takes long road trips and we have a larger car to aviod being cramped up the whole way there.

I would agree that cars are a necessary evil when other transportation options are not available, but only in the US would the Impala be considered mid sized. I am currently studying in Mexico, where people tend to have larger families than in the US, and cars like the Impala, while not nonexistent, are relatively rare. Lower incomes and higher gas prices mean that most cars here are small European or Mexican made economy cars, of which a huge variety are available.

Don't people carry as many passengers as they did in the past? Today's "day and age" doesn't seem like a factor in the type of cars people would drive...
