I like one of the ideas of this movie.

It's about humans invading another planet with no regard for the natives.

...No.
You're thinking of the M. Night Shayamalan "The Last Airbender" which comes out in 2010.

scroll down the page for a teaser

There seems to be too many difference between the alien world and the military one to blend perfectly.

But maybe I'm wrong.

This seems like it will be visually amazing with a paper-thin plot.

I just got back from seeing this in 3D, which I would absolutely recommend as the film lends itself very well to it.

To be honest, I wanted to see this film purely for it's special effects- and they didn't let me down. They were exquisite and well executed.

However, true to form with James Cameron, the plotline is pretty thin and predictable and the characters lack depth- also the ending was spectacularly cheesy.

Saying that, it was a fun and entertaining film with amazing special effects. See it in 3D, though, seriously.

I *think its because the Marines stay in some kind of chamber and they have charactors running around out there doing stuff and thats their avatar.

I know im talking out my ass but im either right or spectacularly and comically wrong, and either would be fun for me

you are right.
avatars are genetically engineered vessels tailored to a person. the person lays in a machine and their consciousness is transferred over.

The visuals are spectacular. I don't think I have ever seen a better looking film.

The plot is a 'done-to-death' tale of an invader going native.

The science in this "science fiction" movie is completely screwed up. Islands floating in the sky? Mining the miracle element "Unobtainium"? Don't insult me.

Crap film. The fantastic visuals are the only thing that kept me from walking out.

I wonder what Jeramey Piven thought of the role Parker.

I wonder if he's getting royalties.

Sci fi is always based solely on our logic? Waaaah? While we're at it...that planet had lemurs! And dogs that were a tad different! FAKE!

Blade Runner constructed a world that is both 1980s tech with futuristic robots?! WHAT A JOKE!

Ok fine I agree Unobtainium was a tad silly

Also....all that tech and they are still using cheap rear-view mirrors? PSSSH

And yes, done-to-death plot is done-to-death.

Leave it to a quarter of a billion dollars to make it far more attractive than it's ever been though.

tbh I'm not that interested in techy gismo 'til they make it available for cinema for adult viewing.

Actually there was a preview for a new terrible-on-purpose 3D movie that involves spring break and people getting eaten by fish....but I'm pretty sure it will have some 3D nipples flying into your face.

y'know, if the plot is secondary, might as well take it all the way...

Here is a shot from that movie.
