This looks really good. It's an interesting story about a great ga-er, guy.

A film bio of San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk, who was assassinated by an ex cop. Milk was gay. Mayor George Moscone, also assassinated in that incident was not. The assassin, Dan White used the "Twinkie defense" and got off with only 5 years.

I don't know whether I'll see it or not. Film biographies are usually pretty weak on history, and the ending is depressing - - in the actual history, that is.

This is where the twinkie defense comes from? That's funny. Now I want to see it even more, although I'll still wait until it comes out of DVD.

I've heard nothing but good things.

The previews for this looked great. I want to see it.

My mom and I went to see this last night, and it was great. I was a little worried about taking mom because I knew it would talk some about his personal life (she's fairly squeamish about sex of any kind onscreen), but it was tasteful in that aspect.
She remembered very well when these events took place, and it was also pretty historically accurate, at least on the big things (there were some details added in for movie-making purposes, of course, but the main story was unchanged).
The assassinations were dealt with very respectfully (no gratuitous gore), and Dan White (the killer) wasn't demonized. In fact, the only demonization in the film really was of Anita Bryant, but she deserved it.

I'd recommend it, absolutely. Sean Penn was amazing, had Milk's mannerisms down to a T. It's a touching (and believe it or not, uplifting) story.

I'm glad they made a movie about him, otherwise I would have no idea who this guy was...

looking forward to see it.

I think I might like to see it. Doesn't look horrible...

I wanted to see it, but it didn't come here. I blame the Bible Belt.

We had to drive 40 minutes to find a theater playing it.

I imagine that if it gets a bunch of Oscar nominations, it'll get a much wider release.

I'm really lucky the movie's playing at the local movie theater. But then again, I don't exactly live in a very conservative place.

Either way, I'm going to say it tomorrow. I'm excited.

It was a great movie. I enjoyed it a lot.
It was sad, it was funny, it was good.

See the first one. This is somewhat of a remake.. but I think that's the wrong term.. Anyhow, here: [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088275/] The Times of Harvey Milk [/url] (1984). It's directed by a teacher at my school.

Sorry: The Times of Harvey Milk (1984) By Rob Epstein

And I meant to say see this one also. VERY different approach while telling the same story.

This one (2008) was much more of a movie than a documentary meant to re-tell / rekindle the spirit of the movement, but that was expected. I didn't expect the surprisingly accurate cast and the ability to transform the neighborhood (I saw when they were filming) so flawlessly!

Especially with the camera shop. Castro Camera of course doesn't exist anymore, but neither does the building! It's all one huge 'store'(?) or office or something now. I don't remember exactly, but it looks nothing like what it used to, and they transformed it so beautifully! I know it's Hollywood and they can do that, etc.. but I was still blown away by all the details they paid attention to.

I felt it had somewhat of an awkward introduction to the story, and although I couldn't help but be biased by the prior documentary, local history, and landmarks all around the city- it wasn't really what I expected it to be. It almost made me angry that it had such a peaceful ending, too.

Knowing of the characters and knowing the story in and out- the casting and facial expressions of the characters alone really MADE the movie for me. Especially Emile Hirsch and James Franco. Awesome job, guys!

I don't know about the added poetic elements, though.. I mean.. I know it's not intended to be a true documentary but just the way they portray Harvey's assassination.. how slow and awful and depressingly silent it was.. hm.. I don't know.. It was just an artistic move I'm not sure I agree with. I guess it makes sense.. bit I am biased.

But I'd reccomend seeing the 2008 Milk then getting Epstein's 1984 documentary on NetFlix or wherever else you can find it.

Also- This movie is rated R for a reason. There is sex in it. Man to man sex. Expect it.
13 yrs ago, 8 mos ago - Monday 1/5/09 - 6:14:02 PM EST (GMT-5)
I still don't get it though. There is no actual nudity, I mean, I know sex is implied but they don't really show it.

And there's barely any swearing in the movie. And also the amount of violence is... negligible.

So yeah, I disagree with the rating. But that's just me.

I loved this movie! I knew nothing about Harvey Milk going into it and this movie was a good intro to that period of history in San Francisco.

I loved it. Very poignant.

Great acting too.

I adored this film. Honestly, I think Penn should get the Oscar for this. Sean in full flight is a wonderful thing, an acting tour de force. Totally convincing in the love scenes, he seems completely comfortable in another man's shoes. The mannerisms and small vocal affectations were so skillful.

I agree, Abz, really touching in places. Emile Hirsch was amazing, too. I really rate this guy. I think he'll go on to do magnificent things.
13 yrs ago, 7 mos ago - Tuesday 2/10/09 - 9:11:24 AM EST (GMT-5)
I agree about the love scenes, chipsy. Quite often, when straight men play gay (for lack of a better term), it looks contrived and forced, but this was just natural and lovely.
