I'm not going to say I loved this movie, but I did appreciate the complexity and all the layers and nuances within. If you check out the imdb boards, you can find threads on a lot of the little puzzles, secrets, coincedences, and details in the film. I love that the writer/director expended so much effort in this project. It's the difference between pure entertainment and art.
As always, Kaufman's ideas dazzle with brilliance, and gently amuse, whilst slowly turning perception inside out.
Unlike earlier Kaufman efforts, it seems a little too smugly self-aware to reach true greatness. Gone is the sweet niaivté of Eternal Sunshine or Adaptation, replaced with an almost self-congratulatory overly self-conscious effort to be quirky, which left me with a feeling of disappointment.
The cast do stellar work, PSH, Samantha Morton and Michelle Williams all shine in this film, but ultimately, I was left feeling that it would have been a better film had it not tried quite hard.
