Based on the short-lived but kick-ass scifi/western style television sereis, Firefly. It is the first of a three picture deal that picks up the story more or less where the show left off.
Looks like it is going to be more action based than the show was, hopefully that won't take anything from the story. They are keeping all of the orginal actors as well so I expect good things.
I've heard from fans of the seires that were lucky enough to see an advance screening that say the movie is fantastic.
I have the series on DVD (as impresive as that is) and love it! I regret not being able to have seen it on TV. The show is just great. I'm a fan of Sci-Fi westerns in anime and I was not disapointed with the shows.
It was a travesty that this show got cancelled, and I've been waiting for this film to come out for about six months...
The show got progressively better and better, right up until the dead stop where it was cancelled by morons.
Apparantly Fox have been begging Joss and the people now associated with it to let them give him another series and do basically whatever he wants, but he's in the joyous position of being able to tell them all to merrily go f**k themselves, which is doing.
*Spoiler for the comics* So don't read this if you want to read the comics that fill in the tv show-film gap before you get to see the film...
Oh, and the other day I got to read the three part comic that describes what happens between the end of the series and the start of the film.
So FYI, if you have not read the comic, there is a litle bit missing.
Essentially, Inara is planning to leave (does she ever do anything else?) and Book gets ticked off with Mal, and punches him out, and then decides he'd better part company becuause he doesn't like who he's turning into by staying with them.
Which is essentially the backstory for why Book isn't with them.
Oh, also, the guys who like to wear their blue washing up gloves all the time? They've sent some guy after the Serenity crew. Also, one of their smart suits gets torn at one point, and you get to see that the blue material is actually a protective suit of sorts that covers them all over underneath their clothes.
^So that's what you'd be missing out on in the comic. That, and a fairly good story aside from that, but that's the upshot of what you'd miss out on...
Morena Baccarin is so hot! I can't wait for this movie. I really hope it becomes a franchise. I hope Joss gets his ducks in a row and gets this made into a TV show again.
I saw an advance screening the other day, the movie is GREAT! Everything I loved about the television show is there, the humor, the characters, the action. One very, very small criticism is that the benefit of the large screen is not used to its full potential, sometimes (but not always) the camera angles used remind me more of a television show then a movie. This detracts little from the overall experience. Overall Score: 9.9/10
The movie looks cool, but i just recently found out it was a tv show. How much do i need to know about the show in order to see the movie? Or dont see it until i see every rerun on sci-fi network, in which case the movie would be on DVD by then.
All will be explained in like five minutes into the movie. You really don't need to watch the tv series to know what will happen but it would help. I saw it at midnite and was pretty impressed. It does hold true to the tv series and I loved them for that. You finally get to see River kick some SERIOUS ass. The movie is worth seeing just for that. It's a good movie to see regardless of whether you're a browncoat or not, especially if you like action, comedy, and love stories. There was only one part of the film that makes me curse Joss right now but I won't say which part since I don't want to be a spoiler and since it happens near the end but be prepared to be a little bit devasted...
I have some beef, way too many close-ups for one and the characters were completely overdone. I felt like there was a partial attempt to establish them outside of a straight continuation of the show, but I wish they would have just gone one way or the other. The compromise didn't work for me; it gets substantially better a little less than half way trough when they finally stop with it. Also there were some very hokey and over-dramatic bits which broke up my involvement in the story.
Advice, see it in an empty theater, as with many similar movies recently the fans will ruin this by their presence.
Things I liked; great closure for anyone who was a fan of the show. I was happy pretty much all around with the way they wrapped this up. The story lines were all nicely resolved while your emotional investment remains very much unresolved, which I think is a hallmark of a good story. As usual a great bad guy and action packed with (mostly) great dialogue and comedic timing.
Yeah, the dialogue was awesome. So was the villain. Heck, Mal might even be a villain. Of course, I wished they showed more of Inara, but then it would have been R or NC-17.
One thing I really liked about the movie is there wasn't anything I would really do differently. Everything was true and consistent with the world that it was made in.
I haven't seen the TV show since it was on Fox, and everything fell into place. I saw it with some friends who didn't even know it was a TV show before, and it didn't detract from the film.
I want to say more, but I don't want to give anything away. It's just really really good.
I am 50 and a fan of Sci-Fi since I was a small kid. "Serenity" is now, without a doubt, on my top 10 Best Sci-Fi movies! There was so much good about it i don't even know where to begin. Everything was top notch, but the story was a great continuation of the TV series. Still a movie was a much better environment for the story. Don't miss it!
Nightgoddess: You shouldn't be lost at all. It has enough introductory stuff to give the background of all the characters and history. And it's really, really good.
I haven't seen this movie yet, although I really want to. I'm reading the novelization right now, which I know, yes, it's a dumb thing to do. But that's because I doubt that I'll be able to see it...so yeah. But it looks really good though.
