In my neighborhood, you can't put a sign up anywhere... Even if it's for a lost dog or something.

^^^ Exactly, that is what is happening here. Nobody is persecuting her for supporting the troops, its just a strict law against any type of signs at all. She should stop trying to make herself out to be such a victim.

"There's a violation to have any sign in any homeowner's yard, regardless of what it says," Manning said.

it is a stupid rule. its like, if they made a rule that you couldnt have any magnets on your cars and if you did, you would be fined $100 for every time you got caught with it on there. so many people with the "Support Our Troops" magnets would be so mad. she is just expressing her anger. its not like she has a burning cross in the yard and dancing around in a white robe.

If I had my way, HOAs would be outlawed. These communist organizations make you pay for the privilage to tell you what you can do on your own land. No one should have that right. Home owners associations are wrong and completly unamerican. NO one will tell me what I can put on my house or on my lawn. If you don't like the way my house looks, MOVE, you selfish bastards!

Agreed. It's Her Property, So Why Should She Have To Take It Down? It'd Be Another Story If It Said Something Unreasonable But I See No Harm Is This Wife Supporting Her Husband.

She knew she was going to have to follow these rules when she decided to move into the house. Homeowner's associations exist, as far as I can tell, to keep everybodies property values up. If they didn't exist, your home price could drop tens of thousands of dollars because your neighbor decided to never keep up the house and keep a POS truck rusting on the lawn. So while a support our troops sign won't decrease property value, they would be required to allow any type of sign go up if they made an exception for her, someone could put the most vulgar sign up and they wouldn't be able to touch it.

but you CAN make exceptions to the rule. say, make her pay a fee each month/year of a miniscule amount. then you can regulate the signs that go up, for each sign, a different fee. vulgar signs, you can put a fee of $1000/day and they person wouldnt put it up. $1/day is resonable, but unjust if they do decide to raise it continually.

The US Supreme Court said that the test of freedom of speech only really arises where you do not agree with what is being said. How would you feel if the sign said Support Osama Bin Laden or Pro Life etc?

Those Abughraibis should be sent home a long time ago, so this "Support the troops" sign doesn't make sense anyway. Hey, just flaming.

Housing associations are stupid, but that's besides the point. When she moved into the neighborhood, I assume she was notified of such a policy, either through meetings or handbooks. By moving into the neighborhood, she was accepting to abide by the rules. So although I see nothing wrong with her sign per se, she agreed to follow the rules and should continue to do so.

HOA's are the National Socialists-redux, & on a smaller scale...they are run like a small 3rd world fascist banana republic. Some of those neighbourhoods are so homogenous it borders on cloning....beige/sand/taupe as far as the eye can see. I'm gonna have nightmares now.

the sign is offensive to people who see the US troops as an illegal occupying force. So why should her neighbours, assuming they have a sense of right and wrong, have to look at it from their homes.

I understand the whole property value protection of the HOA. What I don't understand is the people saying that if you don't support the troops, you are a communist/nazi (although lolakitty72 had a very interesting description). I support the troops, but I do it in other ways then pay lip service with a sign in my front yard and a sticker on my car. I have sent many care packages over to Iraq in order to give them the small things they need. I suggest you stop slandering us and help us. BTW, I don't support the war in Iraq, I support the men and women that are brave enough to go over there by choice. Also, the link is broken.

They shouldn't haven't changed the rule for her sign, now it would be very unfair to not change the rule for other signs. If she knows that there is rule about signs, just take down the damn sign and stop being such a baby about about it.
