I live in the land of Mexican food, yet have no idea what most of it is. Ive tried googling, but with stuff like taco and burrito, i get wildly different/ variety of answers.

Mostly, i want to know if i go into a restaurant and order a _____, what am i gonna get

Torta
Burrito
Gordito
Enchilada
Flautas

Though, this is more of hey, Mexican food thread, then a hey, help me with what these are. Though. That's appreciated too

Every time i get tacos somewhere, it's a soft shell, super doughy thing im not fond of but i have no idea what i should be ordering. Normally, i just wouldn't get Mexican but that's kinda impossible here. Plus i bet there's something i like, I'm just not aware of it yet.

What's your go to Mexican restaurant food?

P.s. Rhonda Rousey is a terrible actress.

We don't get anywhere near enough access to Mexican food I love a torta though
We have one Mexican place here, and they make great nachos, but it's not very affordable

I usually get enchiladas.

One place near my old workplace made excellent burritos, so I only got burritos there.

My younger son usually gets tacos- - he likes the soft corn tortillas rather than the flour ones.

My wife likes chimichangas- - like a burrito, but deep fried.

From the Mexican food we had growing up....

Torta is a Mexican sandwich, delicious.

Burrito, extra large tortilla full of meat, cheese, sometimes rice lettuce, tomatoes, salsa, sour cream, or guacamole

Enchiladas are tortillas filled with meat, beans, or cheesr or some combo of these, covered in a red enchilada sauce and baked

Flautas are tortillas filled with meat and fried.

Enchiladas could have red sauce, green sauce or mole sauce.

I am a picky eater.

What I usually get is either a few hard shell tacos with meat and cheese only and a side of rice. Or I get two enchiladas. Those have both a red, chili flavor sauce and some of that cheese on top. Or I get one taco and one enchilada. I do not like those beans they serve.

Another thing I really really like is called ACP and what that is, is seasoned, grilled chicken that is on rice and then they pour that delicious queso sauce over it. I love that queso sauce. If I don't get ACP I usually order queso sauce to go with the tortillas they bring out.

My husband's favorite is called a chili relleno (sp?) and it is some kind of chili pepper stuffed with meat and I think they fry it and put sauce on it...I don't know. He loves them and I won't try it.

I also like a basic quesadilla.

For dessert...fried ice cream or sopapilla!

Yum!

I learned today that an empanada is a dessert thing.

Churros are good too but not always available

Churros! Ohhh the pizza place near buy has churros. Delicious. And i have a feeling they are subpar, there are better churros to be had.

I think it's usually a poblano pepper.

I like chili relleno...

Tamales are the best.

The Mexican restaurant I used to frequent in Orlando made the most amazing cheesy poblano potatoes.

I wish I could replicate them myself but I can't because they were magical.

Just got this in the mail today.

It’s decent. Their burritos are hearty.

There’s a few places around that are more authentic though. This is not owned by Mexicans. Several of the restaurants in the area are.

quesadillas and burritos are my go-to mexican food. there are plenty of great ones around me.

Mexican food is so cheap...at least here they are. And on the back of the grocery store receipts there are always coupons. $5 off $20 is quite a deal. It usually cost us below $20...but we don't order the alcohol drinks.

I once found a hair in my quesadilla and it put me off so bad.
Haven't had the heart to eat anything Mexican again.
I did try a Mexican burger, but they forgot to put the nachos in there.
My luck with Mexican food hasn't been great.

But generally I can't stand going to places and finding out the owners have no association with the food they make. Mexicans should own Mexican restaurants, or at least the chefs should be Mexican.

The last bit there I agree with, every single "Italian restaurant" over here are just Turks. Every single one of them

And sadly no Mexican place anywhere near here, shocker I know,
Not that I could have afforded it anyways but I just make the stuff myself,

A man, making his own food instead of fast food every day.. I know I know, I'm a gem

I normally go with fajitas! Grilled beef, chicken, shrimp, or whatever the restaurant has. Comes with grilled/sauteed peppers and onions and tortillas, cheese, guacamole, sour cream, etc to make your own.

Enchiladas very WILDLY based on the place. Beef ones normally come with a red sauce. Cheese ones normally come with queso. Chicken ones normally come with a sour cream sauce.

Flautas are usually chicken or beef rolled in a corn tortilla and deep fried. Also called tostadas.

Burritos are described as above...OR you can get it deep fried with sauce on top which makes it a chimichanga.

Tamales are amazing, but try to find an authentic place for those. Depending on where you live, they're usually REALLY popular during Christmas time and you can buy them by the dozen from people making them at home, authentically. Which sounds sketchy but they legit make the BEST ones.

Also - elotes!! Corn (in a cup or on the cob) covered in melted butter, mayo, cheese, and a chili powder or spicy seasoning. Sometimes even crushed up hot cheetos.

If you can, find a place with good mole sauce. It makes everything better.

Empanadas can be savory (filled with meat and cheese) or a dessert.

Sopapillas are a good dessert, especially with butter and honey drizzled over them.

A lot of places also have flan or tres leche cake.

Also, keep in mind that there's a huge difference between Tex-Mex and authentic Mexican food places. Most chains are Tex-Mex. If you want real, authentic Mexican food, find a small, individually owned shop. That's where the best stuff is.

I'm in Texas and eat both Tex-Mex and authentic Mexican food almost weekly. It's a staple here!!

Thus concludes my TedTalk

I absolutely don't care about this. There used to be a great little Italian restaurant near our former office that was run entirely by Mexicans and it was great.

It might upset the people that don't approve of cultural appropriation, but I don't believe that one needs to be Mexican in order to do a good job preparing Mexican foods...
1 yr ago, 9 mos ago - Thursday 10/17/19 - 1:38:21 PM EST (GMT-5)
...or any other ethnic food for that matter.
