So here is what i don't understand. My grandpa married a Catholic woman and was an apostate. But I guess privately kept hia beliefs and raised my dad that way. Then my dad imposed no holidays but my Catholic mom would bring us to her side of the family to celebrate. So it was always a weird tone, having to be sort of shady and divided about holidays.
Anyway, they still depress me and I don't like them.

In other news, had a nice Easter dinner with my mom. We started a thing a few years ago where it's just me and her and her dogs and birds. Then I go home to rest and she goes to another party with her brothers and sisters and cousins and people.

My mom was telling me about a new depression treatment where they stop your brain, like temporary death. I have not googled this yet. I'd try it.

Oh, the part that I don't understand is why grandpa was so into that religion but was ok with leaving and being shunned.

As a kid, I didn't understand that he couldn't really be a JW with his lifestyle, he had to have lost his family and sure enough, we didn't meet any of them. It seemed normal. He died when I was in high school and hadn't thought about things that much.

You'd think he'd either stay in good standing or leave his old beliefs behind if he was shunned. So I don't get it. There's no one to ask anymore.

I don't see any articles about it. Maybe she's confused.

But she said it definitely wasn't regular ECT or anything. Actually kinda stopping your brain altogether.

Maybe she dreamed it?

Remember flatliners?

Yeah, that's what I thought of too.

Is she maybe confused and thinking of deep brain stimulation? That's not "stopping your brain," but it's certainly a radical step that's been experimentally used to treat depression.
(I know someone who had it done, but not for depression, for a neurological condition)

No, I went down the line of all those treatments and she said no.

It was a complete stopping of brain waves, something brand new and experimental.

I don't see anything about it though so I don't know where she came up with this information.

My best guess is that someone else explained deep brain stimulation as something way more drastic and she received false information.
My mom is not usually gullible or a dummy...I'll have to ask her who told her this false info.

Yeah that is strange. But new/weird medical stuff gets lost in translation when people who don't really understand it talk about it so it wouldn't be surprising if it was just some kind of telephone game thing. I'm really interested to know what it was, though!

Me too. I'll have her send me a link if she actually read something.

easter stopped being a huge family holiday once they stopped hiding eggs

I think it’s probably the lamest holiday because it’s always on a sunday, so I never get a day off out of it

Kateumms mentioned the other day that they have Easter Monday, a bank holiday.

Stupid U.S. doesn't have that.

I don't work Mondays anyway but I feel sorry for those of you who do.

When we were kids my sister and I were seriously afraid that our cat would kill the easter bunny.

We have Easter Monday too. But not everyone gets it off. I think banks and government employees get it off. My husband doesn’t though.

I do love the 4 day weekend.

I’ve known a few people who have been shunned from their church but they keep with the beliefs minus the ones that got them shunned. I’ve never asked them but always wondered too.

I think it’s a comfort thing. Craving the familiar when nothing is familiar.

Or maybe it’s like trying to lessen the blow for people who believe in getting into heaven. Like a little kid breaking something of his parents, so he cleans the whole house so he can be all “I broke this, but I did all this, plz don’t kill me”
2 yrs ago, 4 mos ago - Sunday 4/21/19 - 9:26:28 PM EST (GMT-5)
That doesn't sound like a real thing... but I'd probably try it. I've tried TMS (maybe) and ECT and they had no effect. So I'm willing to try anything now.

Peddlefish, totally agree on all that.

I'm so curious what the event was where he broke from the JWs. Not sure if it was before or because of his marriage. Seems unlikely it was due to my grandma because they didn't seem all that crazy about each other and didn't have children right away. But you never know.

Just curious with no one to ask anymore. Might have to slink around outside some kingdom halls and play detective. (Not really)
