So I'm willing to forgo my lovely necklace for Christmas so that we can get a digicam. But we don't have a lot of money, and I don't know squat about cameras.

So, can anyone recommend one under $200 that would make okay videos as well? Don't really care/know about the specs. Just want a camera.

Thanks!

I have the Olympus Stylus 790 SW, and it's amazing. Drop proof (5ft), water proof (10 ft), freeze proof (14F/-10C), and dust proof. On top of that, it takes excellent pictures and video.

I highly recommend it.

Just get a webcam and I know a way it can pay for itself.

Don't know about the newer models, but the video quality is kind of crap on it.

(actually, my favorite thing about that camera is the LED light, in addition to the flash. It lets you take super nice macros without a tripod and without the harsh flash)

While I'll agree it's not dedicated video camera, for what it is - it's definitely not bad.

This video was taken on it:

Yeah, it does alright quality video, for a pocket-camera.

YT really destroys photos when you upload them. Here are links to the most recent macro shots I've really liked:

Although, be warned I've had limited success with the underwater function. Which was super frustrating. The first day into a trip to Thailand I took it snorkeling and the screen died. Really unfortunate. It's since dried out and works fine, but I'm not submerging it again.

I've had no issue with that. I used it, at Copper, directly from jacuzzi/pool (underwater) to the cold air, with no issues. (I never tried more than 10' though - maybe that was why?

Maybe. Or maybe the salt water? I'd used it in a pool before and had no troubles.

Yeah, I've only used it in pools and lakes. Worked great, for me.

Or I just got a bum camera. Or I'd dropped it and dislodged one of the gaskets. Who knows.

I've dropped mine quite a few times, and it's done well - but yeah - things happen, sometimes.

I like that its underwater too! I need a nice elcheapo for quick outings. My monster isnt exactly typical sleek.

We picked up disposable underwater cams for our Jamaica trip and I was so sad with how they turned out. Weve determined to get a digital for when we go back.
