The concept of a ``catchy`` song is probably only sixty years old, really. The phonograph wasn`t invented till the late nineteenth century and Robert Johnson wouldn`t sell his soul till... Who's Online | Find Members | Private Messages

I think I'm going to start calling parts of songs particularly catching.

The latter.

I'm not going to go too far out of my way to avoid incidental music, but I'll try not to run into it.

An idealist's fancy, indeed it drew me in. Alas, a hand must commence it.

So I cheated a bit by hanging out with people last night. My friend who I hadn't seen in a while wanted me to check out some beats he had made and also some disgusting new dubstep he had been listening to. I obliged. I still haven't individually listened to music though, which is the real test.

In a group is one thing, especially if the music is intended to be discussed by said group, but alone is an escape. I turn to the music alone. I don't want to do that.

New Wolf and Lamb podcast. Got it. Told myself it would be okay for just one podcast, with earnest attention. Went to plug it into my stereo. I had unplugged the stereo the other night after making this decision.

Well played self, well played.

QFT. The crap I watch when I fold laundry, I swear.

It's like if anything good is on, I go too slow. (I time myself - I can fold seven large loads in just under fifteen minutes - new record woot. Take that, Martha Stewart.)Yeah, I sound sane.

I have to fold laundry at some point today...

...without music!

I cheated again. I listened to Spirit in the Sky.

I'm claiming religious observance.

I can't knock 'catchy' in all contexts. Its understandably synonymous with the worst kind of vapid commercial pop, but I'd even go so far as to say Ludwig Van's 'Ode to Joy' is my idea of catchy. (Its melodic and I find myself humming it in the shower sometimes).

I also have a long-standing love affair with synthpop of the 80's and beyond, arguably some of the catchiest music ever recorded. That doesn't mean all of it lacks a certain amount of depth or artistic merit. Even the sappier gay (literal, not figurative) love ballads of Erasure or Pet Shop Boys still have the staying power after 20 years that Lady GaGa probably never will.
