"Before a quartet of Democratic members of Congress could take to the steps of the Supreme Court on Thursday to tout a new bill that would expand the number of justices from nine to 13, leaders of their party were already deflating that effort."

Democrats decried Republicans for what they called a sham and hypocritical confirmation process for Justice Amy Comey Barrett just days ahead of the Nov. 3 elections that determined control of the White House and the Senate.

Four years earlier, Republicans had refused to consider President Barack Obama’s nominee, Merrick B. Garland, for eight months because they said it was too close to a presidential election. Garland is now attorney general.

Play with fire you get burnt.

Here the system was rigged in favour of Conservatives until a Liberal PM created a huge number of life peers to take control of the 2nd chamber. the House of Lords.

The court is already packed. Between what happened with Garland and Barrett, the Republicans have shown themselves to be complete hypocrites on this matter.

No packing at all- - it wasn't like Republicans knew Clinton would lose. After everyone complained about how unfair it was, they made it a point to not delay for the election with Barrett.

Actually, only 4 Dems are trying to pack the court. The rest of the Dems are being more reasonable and want to avoid politicizing the SC.

if they weren't representing super liberal districts i doubt they'd actually be on board in the first place. they don't risk losing re-election so makes sense that they'd be in favor of court packing.

You can’t be serious. I think you should really consider if this is truthful. Not in the partisan way, truthful. But in the reality way.

It was a fair question. I'm still not seeing anyone getting burnt...

...aside from maybe the 4 Dems that are pushing this, but I doubt they are going to be damaged by their proposal that isn't even going to be brought to the floor despite having Democrat House leadership.

...and since the Dems aren't going to bring it to the House floor, the Republicans certainly aren't getting burnt.

I gave an example in my first post you c*nt.

Once that door was opened it saw the gradual reduction in the power of the original upper chamber over the next 100 years.

You gave an example of why the Dems might try something like this, but nobody is really getting burnt. This is a dead end proposal.

No I gave an example of where this kind of action can eventually lead. You as usual tried to Sealion your way into your usual bullsh*t.

Which is why i gave you the response you deserved.

The House of Lords vetoed the 2nd Irish Home Rule Bill in 1910. In 1911 they vetoed Chancellor Lloyd-George's Budget, I thought I'd mention that as it is kind of relevant to today. He proposed a new Land tax that would levy a charge against the increase of land that was in the vicinity of new developments. The Lords vetoes it on the basis that there would be a requirement to carry out land valuations and that wasn't within the scope of the Budget.

I was slightly wrong, Asquith the Prime Minister threatened to stack the Upper House with life peers but he didn't actually do it.
17 days ago - Monday 4/19/21 - 12:46:39 PM EST (GMT-5)
He introduced new legislation to limit the power of veto by the Lords. Under such pressure the laws passed the bill which meant the Lords could reject a bill and return it to the Commons with recommended amendments. If the commons refused to accept the amendments the bill would be delayed for a year. The Lords could reject it again recommending amendments but they couldn't reject it a third time. This introduced the ability of the Lords to offer compromises to proposed bills. Through this process the Budget was passed, as was the 3rd Irish Home Rule bill in 1914 and the proposal to give the vote to certain categories of Women. However both these bills were delayed until after WW1.

It took until 1958 for the idea of life peers became a reality, this was a very long game. But the seed had been planted in the Edwardian era. Reforms of the Upper House have continued through the years.

So crowing about what might happen today is no guarantee of what might happen in the future. The spark was struck by the behaviour of Trump and the Cons. The Dems are going to nurture it.
17 days ago - Monday 4/19/21 - 4:57:56 PM EST (GMT-5)
Right- - there are no guarantees, but FDR couldn't get away with doing it back in 1937, and the Dems don't feel able to do it now, there's really no reason to think it is going to happen in the future.

Spoken like a true Conservative.

Again, the court is already packed. Not to mention sooo many judges across the country appointed by this lunatic. All of it packed.
