So, yesterday, I had some fun in the lab.I went to do a diazotinization of a simple aryl amine, which I've done about two dozen times before. This time was different.
Not the different you're thinking of, though. Not BLAM! different, which is what diazocompounds are wont to do from time to time. No, this was far worse.
I took my substrate up in glacial AcOH (as per usual), I dissolved my NaNO2 in water (as per usual), and I began to add it to the stirred solution of AcOH under N2 (as per usual). Except, not usual, red gas starts forming. Immediately. And in great quantity.
The red gas, by the way, is deadly effing toxic.
Quickly, because I'm an amazing, kickass chemist, I jammed a sparge line on the flask (which fortunately was already hooked to a bubbler and vent hose) and then took the other end and stuck a pipet on it, plunging the end under water.
Fortunately, I had no other reactions going, so I could crank up the N2 and go to town, flushing out the noxious gas.
