I've heard it mentioned here, but I don't think it's a big thing.

A bunch of the hardcore scene that goes to shows in Albany represent the 518. I think it's something that people do everywhere.

Ps. I like how you listed all the area codes from places no one really gives a crap about. I mean come on.. Those guys HAVE to use their area codes because.. well.. "Walnut Creek" (and the like) just doesn't sound very badass at all.

Who the hell uses their area code for anything other than addressing mail?
That's just incredibly odd

I also use area codes when I make a phone call. But that's the crazy motherf*cker that I am.

I would assume the distinction only really makes sense in larger cities where enough people from different area codes would actually run into each other.
But anyways, I was born 315, moved to 716, which was changed to 585, then went back to 315 for school and am now in 607 for grad school.
But am I technically a 607 if my phone is still 585?

That's the only example I can think of. I've never heard of that happening anywhere else; certainly not anywhere near where I live, and I live in a fairly big place.
Using phone area codes seems even more strange.

So true. People from Walnut Creek (ahem ) never say that. They always go 925, or the Dub C.
But others do it too.
YEAH, THE 925. WOOO.
