We practiced (past tense) polygamy in the 1800's because there were a large amount of widowed women without sons. They joined a family only with the aprovval of the first wife. They only had kids with the second if the first aprovved. In no way did mormons have steamy threesomes. It was banned when there were enough sons to help the mothers.
