If you believe in the Judeo-Christian God, would the confirmed existence of intelligent extra-terrestrial life have an impact on that belief?

Well there are a lot of questions that may arise amongst believers.

Like every other major breakthrough or discovery, believers would have the task of reconciling the reality of the world with their belief.

Where, and how easily an intelligent, alien species fits into the myriad of christian worldviews depends on the circumstances I guess.

Like how alike to humans are they? Do they have their own religions? Are they more or less technologically advanced? etc.

If the "prawns" from District 9 came to Earth, fundamental Christians would probably be OK with it.

The more Conservative would be able to say that they were savage due to their lack of christianity while the more liberal would probably be able to convert a few of them (provided they had a good supply of dog food).

Maybe the aliens would be Christians, you know the god son made the rounds of lots of intelligent planets and got tortured and zombified on each to do what ever it is that was supposed to do.

The Vulcans from Star Trek on the other hand would probably be difficult for christianity to survive.

Not only are the Vulcans superior technologically but their superior intellect would mean that christianity probably wouldn't survive an encounter with them.

Well.. he skipped the Chinese and Indians so what makes you think that he'd do a whole other planet?

And if we define intelligence as being self-aware then he skipped dolphins and chimps and (according to some) dogs

Obviously they had to spread THE WORD to dolphins, dogs and those heathen folks. It's not like he had all the time in the world with the Apocalypse on the way and all.

lol... obviously.

I'm sure such a narrative might be possible if circumstances permit.

I'm just saying that I doubt any extra-terrestial civilization would contain a religion that would match christianity as it is expressed on Earth to any degree where they could be considered "christian" let alone be identified in such a way.

Christianity has never suffered to any important degree from encounters with superior intellects, alas.

haha! You guys are really funny! Wasnt there a Star trek where some alien thing thought that whales were the intelligent life? maybe God is a whale.

Occasionally superior intellects have suffered from encounters with Christianity, like in the middle ages.

What the hell does technology have to do with anything. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't join the Church of Scientology even if they had 3D tvs installed in all the centers

Myth busters wasn't around in the early ADs, they use technology.

Ok,

Myth busters could look at all those alleged miracles and set up an experiment.

The person I replied to is an alter I caught fishing.

Yeah, I am an alter, but that doesn't mean you aren't trolling hard in this thread.

1 yr ago, 6 mos ago - Wednesday 11/9/11 - 11:34:21 PM EST (GMT-5)
I don't find bugging you amusing. Just your trolling. If it bugs you, I guess that's your problem.

Ever heard of cargo cults?

Technology, especially if it's technology that is far advanced what you're used, can change your perception of the world.

I mean it's happening already and we haven't even met any ETs.

Consider how controversial something like cloning or creating life from non-living substances might be.

If an alien species came along that could.. I don't know.. use your dead mother's DNA to make a fully functioning clone of her for example then yeah.. it would matter.

Even if there medicine was so far advanced that they could live forever would challenge perceptions of life and death.
