technically, sure:
a medicine or other substance which has a physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced into the body.
I guess all foods and liquids could be considered drugs in that definition.

From the view anything is a drug in the right dose, I suppose. But, I don't think I can one of the 6 necessary nutrients a drug.

Well we used to say, when sugar is the only drug left.... the party is over.

i guess it can also come down to what needs an intervention.
doing crack, meth or heroin? definite intervention. guzzling 12 cans of soda a day? that's a slow killer.

A lot of (legal, scientific etc.) definitions explicitly exclude food.
Whether it is or should be depends on the context, really. When you're talking about the relationship with drug use and crime, it probably makes sense to exclude it. When you're talking about something like the mechanisms underlying addiction, it might make sense to use a broader definition. But then, asking whether sugar is addictive is probably more meaningful than asking whether it's technically/generally a drug.

Well, I was thinking of processed sugars. Not naturally occuring sugars that are still in their natural source. So not necessary at all.

Well, I suppose it can have drug-like effects if taken in the right amounts. Like other drugs, it can make a person hyper. Then when the sugar high wears off, you hit an all-time low. And, for diabetics like myself it has a very adverse affect.

No, sugar is sugar. Your body makes it into glucose, period. You require glucose. I don't care if its processed or "natural" or what. Sugar is sugar and it becomes glucose to be used by your body.

Sugar does not make the average kid hyper, or the average adult for that matter. Its a myth.

And there is lots more where that comes from. And there are zero studies correlating hyperactivity to sugar use.

No. A calorie is more likely 1000 calories. Moreover anthracite, the densest calories per mass substance there is, is completely indigestible by humans. So you'd gained no weight at all from it.
