haha. for my senior year English class, we had the choice of what we wanted to study for the last two or three weeks; it came down to mythology versus poetry. I broke the tie in favour of poetry, and I'm pretty sure some of my friends still haven't forgiven me. |

If schools actually taught poetry as a part of every English course, instead of a week or so of reading poetry in class, then yes it would be a good thing. |

Of course they should. Poetry is a major part of contemporary and past literature. It would be ridiculous if schools didn't teach novel; why would poetry be any different? |

YES!
Poetry is so randomly taught now, that unless you create the interest yourself to either write or read it, you suck at poetry when your teacher decides to teach it.
In my senior year, my teacher spent 3 months on poetry, and was so disappointed at the lack of quality in our poems. I hadnt written or even read a poem since 9th grade. How can you blame us when its hardly ever taught?
And really, everyone SAYS they hate poetry in school, because its not cool, its sappy emotional stuff. But at the end of the year everyone did a class evaluation thats anonymous and every single person said they loved the poetry unit. |

I probably wasn't. I just can't think of a single instance in my life where I wished that I had studied more poetry or was thankful for the little poetry that I had studied...

I'm afraid poetry and the humanities are going to go by the wayside as education continues down the path of being broad career training rather than places of higher learning. |

Science, boring and pragmatic? What?
I mean, there's basic research, not always pragmatic. And then the fact that fields are always changing is pretty clearly not-boring.
I mean, I see some value in humanities, but boring?
Show me any poet who was half as interesting a person as Kurt Godel or Alan Turing. |

I cannot think of a single instance of my life where I wished I had studied more molecular biology.
Doesn't mean we shouldn't teach science in school. |

Mer, as always, shares my sentiments.
However, I also think that a broad education is important and, since poetry is a facet of our humanity, should at least be explained. Besides, they have to fill English class with something or otherwise people would realize how useless it is. |

Science and Molecular Biology aren't equal.
Molecular biology is a rather specialized science- - Lots of people who work in scientific fields have never taken any molecular biology...

On top of CD's note, science permeates daily decisions a lot more than poetry. Every time you make a medical decision, you're effectively assessing scientific work, to some degree. And how many "hot-button" issues are really scientific issues that have become overly politicized?
- Evolution
- Vaccines
- Climate change/energy efficacy
...
Honestly, if everyone was more comfortable with how science worked, at least two of those three would be clearly non-issues, and the third wouldn't be a big yelling match, with some people over-emphasizing effects and others completely denying any effects. |

Apart from its 'message' poetry teaches you a lot about your own language, how it works, how it can affect you, what you can do with it. In times where communication is one of the most important skills in daily life while kids seem to be losing touch to their own language more and more I don't hink anything that brings language back to the speaker is taught in vain. |
