Yes. Prison time would be a bit much, but they should be fined the full amount and a little extra. |

S&R, absolutely. But I doubt it'll matter, because I doubt they have the money anyway. |

How would prison time be a bit much? Obstructing the law, and filing false police reports are crimes. |

I thought they found the kid hiding in a box. How do you know the parents had anything to do with it? |

Considering the police said it was a hoax, I'm sure they have a good reason/ |

The family admitted that the whole thing was just to get them a television show.
Crazy, right?
The guy was on WifeSwap, actually. Look up the episode (Hulu, YouTube, ABC?) and see what kind of nutjob this guy is. Really really funny. |

No one was hurt. It would be a waste of prison space. Also, putting both parents in prison would screw the kids. |

Like the kids are well off with parents like that anyway. |

Maybe, but if we took kids away from every parent that you or I deem unfit, there'd be a whole lot more kids in foster care, draining the system even more.

Why the hell not. Not enough people these days are held accountable for their actions. |

Absolutely, and punitive damages as well.

that seems right if it's the normal punishment for this situation, they shouldn't get extra because it was on TV |

during the interview, after the kid says "you said we did it for a show" someone farts. |

They should certainly have to pay a fine. I'm not sure how much the whole operation cost, but I think the fine should be enough to sting, but not enough to ruin them. It's easy to blow a lot of money on a rescue operation.
The fine ought to be enough to teach them a lesson, enough that it deters other parents from similar hoaxes, but not so much that it deters parents who are legitimately worried about their child's safety from reporting it. |

Agreed. $500,000 and/or seems a bit much.

I think that's the sound of the father pooping his pants. |

we always need to think of the chance that there is some really weird mistake as well. Maybe not in this case but you can imagine a situation where this sort of thing might happen, and it just happens that someone is involved in a TV show and it just happens that some kid says something that looks suspicious.
It might be a chance in a million but can you imagine getting a $500 000 bill because of a massive pile of unlucky coincidences. At some point in time a mistake will happen and someone will get totally screwed. |

Woah, $500,000 bill? That is excessive. I doubt they have that kind of cash. Which means they'll file for bankruptcy and probably lose their house. They should be fined, not completely f*cked. |

as catchall said/suggested, if poor families don't trust the police and get confused and start to hestitate before using the emergency services it could result in unnecessary deaths.
So we need to think are we voting for a 'should' in the ideal world or a 'should' knowing that if people are held liable for emergency callouts more people might die per year? |

That's why we have a judicial system. |
