Melissa Etheridge says if California won't allow gays to marry, she won't pay her state taxes. According to Etheridge, the passing of Proposition 8 in California could see her marriage to Tammy Lynn Michaels deemed null and void. Etheridge and actress Michaels wed in 2003 in Malibu, California after a Domestic Partnership agreement was passed in the state. The couple planned on legally getting marrying later this year.

"She and I are not allowed the same right under the state constitution as any other citizen," writes Etheridge. " Okay, so I am taking that to mean I do not have to pay my state taxes because I am not a full citizen."

Yes, just like anyone else.

Yeah. Why should she be exempt just for protesting something she believes in? If that were the case, no one would pay taxes.

For the record, I disagree with the ban on gay marriage, but if she's exempt, it's not fair for just her to get special treatment.

She can always move to NH or Mass.

She'll probably be arrested, but Rosa Parks was arrested too.
Good on her for taking a stand.

Exactly what I was thinking ... I can come up with a lot of reasons I don't want to pay my taxes. But that whole jail thing kind of makes you reconsider...

"According to Etheridge, the passing of Proposition 8 in California could see her marriage to Tammy Lynn Michaels deemed null and void."

and according to California lawyers and lawmakers, that's not even a remote possibility. I do wish that people would at least make an effort to find out if something's true or not before proclaiming it to the world.

anyways, she has a point. I doubt she'll follow through, though.

if she puts the money in a trust account and let it sit there, there isn't much they can do about it.

isn't it unconstitutional for them to make us pay taxes?

Are Melissa Etheridge, Charles Merrill, and myself the ONLY three (3) citizens of ANY (any) Love-Orientation who are FED UP ENOUGH to take a PUBLIC STAND against multiple immoral, unjust legal discriminations by our government ?

Social change starts with individuals. Our government insists on inventing new words....words whose sole purpose is to either hurt us directly [D.O.M.A., D.A.D.T.], or hurt someone's children [N.O.T.A.D.O.P.T.]. How could we NOT draw a line in the sand?

Treating us as 3rd-class Social-Lepers is a cruel legal prejudice whose repercussions profoundly harm our lives. These laws affect our Family-Children-Home-Career-Property-Sec urity-Beloved.....in other words, our..."Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness".

NO TAXATION WITHOUT EQUALITY!

I believe the Sixteenth Amendment gives Congress the power to collect taxes.

What she is doing is trying to turn a black and white issue, into one with gray areas.

You live in a state, you pay that states taxes. End of f*cking story.

Aren't most people arrested for tax evasion if they don't pay their taxes? You can't just decide not to just because you don't get your way about an unrelated issue. That's not how it works.
