I'd say alcohol. Which is funny because I do drink but I don't smoke.

Long term Marijuana use has been proven to increase your chances of developing mental illness.

It's especially bad for people prone to depression.

It has strong links to schizophrenia.

I agree.

My dad drinks and is also a pothead. He's not an alcoholic but I suspect long-term pot has affected him in many ways such as memory, ebility to think, problems with emotion.

Alcohol is by far the worse of the two for alcoholics. But most people that drink don't become alchoholics. I suspect that long term canabis use affects almost everyone to some degree. And most pot users are addicted.

I think i would probably say marijuana

Hahaha, you can't actually get addicted to pot, it's not chemically possible, although I'll give it to you that it affects everyone, not neccessarily in a harmful manner however. MJ is probably the least of society's worries, besides the fact that it is illegal.

If you're worried about physical harm, don't you know what kind of effects long-term heavy alcohol use has on your liver and prefrontal lobe? That's some nasty stuff, let me tell you! You've only got one of each of those, whereas there are plenty of braincells when MJ might kill a few.

Number of annual alcohol related deaths in the United States: 100,000

Number of deaths from marijuana use over the entire history of marijauna use: Zero.

Marijuana policy is completely about right wing closed mindedness, feuled by profit (of prison systems and well paid law enforcement communities), and a government "backdoor" into your personal life.

It's impossible to get an accurate study of marijuana's effects because its use is illegal and therefore kept underground.

That's a canard. Is that alcohol figure restricted to deaths caused by the actual physiological effects of alcohol, or does it include traffic fatalities, alligator-teasing, and falling off roofs? Same question about the marijuana deaths figure, though clearly it does not include deaths caused by impaired judgment due to marijuana use.

I don't disagree that marijuana may be less harmful, or that at the very least it is in the same category as alcohol, but I hate the over-simplicity people resort to in order to defend that point.
Here's one way in which marijuana is more dangerous: No hangover. You smoke too much, you fall asleep. Too much alcohol makes you sick, and you develoop a healthy respect for it as a result. One need only look at this thread for evidence of people...

13 yrs ago, 1 mos ago - Tuesday 5/16/06 - 12:54:58 PM EST (GMT-5)
...assuming too much about marijuana's safety because there's no built-in check on indulging.

Pot could be used to help people (medically, as a fuel source), and alcohol only hurts people.

It's hemp, not pot and the effects of THC that is a potential fuel source (what am I saying, "potential"? It *IS* a fuel source) and valuable fiber to the textiles industry and more. Throw the recreational uses of marijuana into the mix and you lose any credibility regarding the disparagement of alcohol.

Somewhere in all of *your* confusion, you mean.

I would say there are more regular alcohol users than regular marijuana users. I agree that long-term use of both is hazardous and if the same amount of people did each for an extended period of time, marijuana would be worse. But since there's more alcohol users (in my opinion), weed would do the least damage to society.

If that makes sense, can someone please explain it to me, 'cause I'm confused.

Which do you think does the least damage to society: marijuana or alcohol?

Its not the drug that causes the problems, its the people who take them.

I myself have done both, and I haven't harmed society.

Alchohol does not give a hundred percent chance of making you drunk. It is people who over-do that limit who cause the most harm.
