Not necessarily I mean I can admit to being a hypocrit, and I don't change it and I still think its better than denying I'm hypocritical in the first place. I don't do it over huge things but I mean I can't stand fake people who pretend to like you to your face and then turn around and talk behind your back. But I do play nice to peoples face and try and like them and if someone says something bad behind their back I might agree ?

Yeah, I can't say for sure, either. Self-awareness is usually an important prerequisite to fixing something like that, but awareness doesn't always translate to the ability or will to do it. I also think that a key transition from adolescence into adulthood is accepting *certain* imperfections, including *some* hypocrisy.
OTOH, not knowing gets you a pass to a certain extent, but there's also a lack of knowledge born of negligence, or not knowing when you really ought to know.

I'm going to go with no. Intention and motivation matter to a degree, but at the end of the day it's the action that counts to most people, most of the time and you really can't expect people to change their behavior for you... So an unaware person and an unrepentant person pretty much the same level of problem.
The only real difference is that with an unrepentant person you maybe more quick in removing, mitigating or withdrawing from the problem on your own as you'll be less likely to feel the need to keep trying to explain your position and reach an agreement.

It sounds like you're saying that there are a lot of things that may look like hypocrisy on the surface but which have an understandable explanation, yes?

i suppose so!
i was taking it as someone who knows they're a hypocrite or at least has the capacity to discern it in themselves but is too proud or whatever to admit it
the ignorance thing levels it off again

I agree there are times where there's a reasonable explanation, but my point is more that even when there's not your hopes of getting through to a willfully ignorant person are about as likely as regular ignorance. Hipocracy is insult to injury, and while the insult sucks, it's the injury that should matter more. |

Okay, that carifies it, but I strongly disagree that the willfuly ignorant and the honestly ignorant are equal in the potential to get through to them. The willfully ignorant will fight to stay that way against all reason. The honestly ignorant may be incapable of getting it, but there's going to be at least a little hope, and there should be a little more understanding of their condition, and there won't be the malice there is w/ the willfully, stubbornly ignorant.

That depends on the nature of the person and the nature of the incident. You might get through to the unaware guy if it's a new concept, but a lot of people just don't care. Why would I waste my time?

Def, but I, for one, was addressing the comparison between the person who chooses not to understand and the person who truly just doesn't, and who may or may not be able to. I suppose being capable is a prereq to getting it, but I find perceived willingness a greater obstacle more often than that actual ability.

My experience is that caring might get an immediate response, but quickly they will cease caring most of the time.

My new theory is that I should really watch who I talk to. So yeah, it would be worse to admit it, not because there's anything wrong with knowing better and not acting accordingly, but because your life will probably get worse if you're seen as a person with that type of understanding, sans action.
