It has, but I'm sick of people taking it to the opposite extreme. Not being a total piece of sh*t doesn't mean you're a "SJW".

Political correctness? Not me babe!

No. Like is it really THAT hard to not be an assh*le to people who are different than you?

Perhaps it has...

"Laura Ingalls Wilder's name has been stripped from a prestigious book award because of racist themes"

you'd think they'd leave the book banning nonsense in the past. but people surprise me everyday.

It's not a book banning. I'd say "read the article" but you don't even have to. You literally only have to read the headline, and it's in the post.

even if it isn't explicitly called book banning, it would make teachers reluctant to use it in classrooms for fear of being called racist.

It isn't just "not explicitly called book banning." It literally is NOT book banning. They took her name off an award, that's it.

If it comes as a shock or surprise to any elementary teacher that the depictions of native Americans in the Little House books areā€¦less than stellar, then either they've never read them or read anything about them in modern times. Which would be pretty surprising, given how much of a staple those books have been for decades.

Reading lists change all the time, for all kinds of reasons. And that's not a bad thing.

Also, if you're reading a book as a class, it's not only possible, but *appropriate* to contextualize things like that. It's even more possible with the Little House books than it might be with fiction, because they're loosely (and sometimes not so loosely) based on her life.

Naming an award after someone, on the other hand, offers no context for them as a person with multiple dimensions, flaws, or facets. It is simply an honor.

Arguing that taking her name off an award is like book banning is like claiming people who want to take down confederate statues and monuments are really saying we shouldn't even study the civil war at all.

i can remember reading several books that had not great themes for school and then we'd have a discussion in class on why the themes weren't great

Which is they way I would hope these things would work. Unfortunately, I think that since these books are now labeled as having 'racist themes', schools won't make available for classrooms any longer...

Yeah it's almost like teachers know what they're doing and can do things like this.
But hey, we're talking to Mr. "get rid of the Dept. of Ed even though I don't know jack sh*t about it" here.
4 months ago - Thursday 7/5/18 - 4:52:27 PM EST (GMT-5)
Can I just restate that it is NOT necessarily a bad thing for reading lists to change?? Sometimes it's worth keeping a book around even if it has some unpleasant handling of delicate themes. Other times, it's time to retire those particular books and move on to others. I'm not making a statement on which of those categories the Little House books fall into, but it's certainly a point worth considering.
(Personally, I never read them in school, even 30 years ago in a not-so-progressive area. my grandparents had several and I read them for fun.)

what schools are assigning little house on the prairie as required reading anyway?
that sounds dull even by required reading standards
4 months ago - Thursday 7/5/18 - 4:55:35 PM EST (GMT-5)
A book doesn't have to be on a 'reading list' in order to have a place in the classroom.
4 months ago - Thursday 7/5/18 - 4:58:34 PM EST (GMT-5)
ultimately you are just making up reasons in your head to be upset at a name change to an award you have nothing to do with and probably didn't even know existed until you read about it in a headline

I thought it was a good example of political correctness gone mad...

4 months ago - Thursday 7/5/18 - 5:04:58 PM EST (GMT-5)
It's a pretty big step from taking someone's name off a prestigious award to literally removing their books from school libraries.

By the way, a lot of times, the books that are in individual classrooms are purchased by the teacher. Like with their own money.

It's also not a terrible idea to rename awards and things kind of periodically. I mean unless you're just against ever re-evaluating anything based on new information or changing standards/attitudes.
