If you're going to call us ignorant, please learn how to spell "Americans" first. |

It's not that it's a bad thing/stupid or anything like that. I just think in the US they put alot of stock in US nationality and it really cuts into knowing other junk.
I blame the media though. What's funny is that I know more about US history than Australian history.
Funny old world isn't it. |

Here's an interesting crossover to the stereotype discussion. A lot of foreigners feel that Americans are loud and ignorant.
Do you know why?
Because a lot of Americans are loud and ignorant.
But f*ck you anyway, foreigners. |

Lots of people, not just Americans, are ignorant to my opinions because, outside of the internet, I don't share them very much; not the important/controversial ones, anyway. |

That's quite a broad opinion you have there, Lavan. Especially when you generalize all of us, in particular. |

So instead of educating these people you chose to just perpetuate the situation?
yep... |

I think that it's not that "Americans are ignorant" as much as "Whoever's the big dog is ignorant" it's a process that's repeated itself throughout world history, we're just more aware of it now. Rome, Britian, Persia and pretty much ANY nation that arose to dominant power or could be said to be the seat of power for an empire (be that in terms of land owned or land controlled through market means) is going to be considered ignorant to the rest of the world.
This is what creates barbarians at the gates, which is the central conflict that drives social evolution.
Infact, America has a unique situation. They don't control through physical force primarily. They control through market force. Being that the US is largely untouchable because of this, Americans themselves created barbarians at their own gates in terms of subcultures who engaged in a "culture war" from about 1969 |

until about 2005 or 6 (not suprisingly, we all lost, especially in terms of dignity).
BUT, this is what ensures that NO society will stagnate. Ignorance of empire vs. skewed barbarian enlightenment. Whoever wins is the most dominant and either the empire wins only to face a new set of barbarians OR the barbarians become the new empire. |

Good point Kepi.
You forgot one thing. Eventually, all empires crumble and fall. Without exception. |

There are a lot of Americans who are, but there are also lots of Europeans/Asians/etc. who are, as well. |

I think that's implied, if not outright stated. |

If it were up to Americans, the name "Earth" would be changed to "Planet America". Which I guess wouldn't be so bad...it would just be annoying. |

There are people in America who are ignorant. Just as there are people anywhere else who are ignorant... |

I think outsiders get that impression, but in my own (admittedly limited) experience it's not the case. |

No, I don't think I've ever met an American irl who I've thought was particularly ignorant. On the internet there are many, but that's because there are many idiots on the internet in general.
Perhaps the problem is that it's the ignorant Americans who get noticed by everyone else. Ironically, they seem to be the ones who shout their opinions out the loudest. |

agreed. except most of the girls i know are totaly ignorant.
i probably am ignorant too. at least a little thanks to the news over and under exaggerating everything, especially foriegn.
to be quite frank, I have no interest in American history unless you count World War II, which we were not in for very long anyway. even if i am american, i still find a majority of people i have met are either completely ignorant or just stupid. |
