There would be far more organs available if people had to opt-out instead of opting in.

Most people simply don't think about it one way or the other, so will go with the default - at this time, no donation.

Also, if a person opts-in, their relatives shouldn't be able to say "no" afterwards. At this time, even if the person has said that they want to donate their organs, if their family says no, it doesn't happen.

It can be tricky to balance the recognition that we have certain cognitive biases which will affect people's choices, but aren't necessarily about how people actually feel about it, with concerns about (/perceived) coercion. When it's in the context of organ donation and the default potentially saving/costing lives, so long as the option to opt-out is explicit, consequence-free and convenient, I think it's hard to argue against an opt-out system.

They've done a toy experiment here on open days in which they invite members of the public to throw a ball into a bucket from a few meters away. They can either throw with their dominant hand and win one chocolate bar, or throw with their non-dominant hand and win two chocolate bars. You can manipulate the context so that you give them the ball either in the dominant or non-dominant hand as the default, and then give them the choice to switch. Even though the rewards and difficulty are the same regardless of which hand you're given the ball in, people are more inclined to go with the default/status quo option.

Whilst we might like to think that we're always rational about our choices, they are often influenced by fairly arbitrary contextual factors.

I think organ donation should work on the "need a penny, take a penny; have a penny, leave a penny system." Free, undocumented, and performed on convenience store counter tops.

W/ the stipulations FD mentioned, I think an opt-out set-up is best.

I think it's a good idea.

There are probably plenty of people who wouldn't mind donating, but just don't get around to signing up/making their wishes known to their relatives.

In fact, when answering this question, I instinctually voted 'no' because I have an aversion to making things mandatory. Once I'd thought about it more, the choice of words meant less.

I totally agree with making it an opt out process.

Here it's usually part of your drivers licence, but you can sign up separately.

It's more the laziness of people though, if you don't have a drivers license you have to go to the effort of obtaining the paperwork to opt in, and most people will just be like "meh"

When I renewed my driver's license and health card last week, I opted in.

Sign zee papers.

An opt-out system is definitely better.
