According to evolutionary psychology, because men can never be 100% sure their child is theirs, they experience marginally less affection for their children than the mothers. When you go up a generation, the effect should be magnified enough to discern a difference between the two extremes. Question Who's Online | Find Members | Private Messages

well considering my paternal grandparents live on the other side of the world i'd say it was true just because of the literal distance between us. But when we visited of course that wasn't teh case.

All my grandparents died before I was born, so...
10 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Friday 2/13/09 - 8:26:51 PM EST (GMT-5)
I've never met any of my grandparents.
10 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Friday 2/13/09 - 8:30:50 PM EST (GMT-5)
Quite the opposite actually. My maternal grandma would blow into town once every year or so for about an hour, give us a dollar and tell us to scram. My paternal grandfather was fantastic. You couldn't ask for a better one. So, of course, he died when I was 8 and she is still alive.

Negative. All my grandparents were very loving and attentive.

My paternal grandfather died when my dad was only three, so I never knew him.

My other three grandparents were all very loving and doting - in fact, my maternal grandfather was, at times, the MOST loving.

I didn't really experience a difference...
Then again, I get nearly all my physical facial features from my father...
It's pretty clear that I'm his child! haha

I think my maternal grandmother was (and still is) the most loving, and my paternal grandmother was the most distant.

Actually, this does apply to me. Hm..
10 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 2/14/09 - 2:17:24 AM EST (GMT-5)
Sort of. My maternal grandma is awefully nice (so is my maternal grandfather) while both of my paternal grandparents couldn't be more distant - they're both dead.

Both of my paternal grandparents died from cancer before I was born. My grandfather had brain cancer, and my grandmother had bone cancer. And my maternal grandfather died from toxic shock from one of his implants. So really, the only grandparent I have is my maternal grandmother.

My maternal grandmother was the most loving of all my grandparents. My grandfathers were about the same but my paternal grandfather died when I was about 10.

Ditto.
Only mum's father died before any of his granchildren were born.
10 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 2/14/09 - 5:24:32 AM EST (GMT-5)
Not at all. My paternal grandparents are awesome, while my maternal grandma is, not mean, but not exactly close to us grandkids.

Fascinating study. I felt amazing love from all four grandparents in their own way, so I don't think we apply in this case.
10 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 2/14/09 - 3:46:50 PM EST (GMT-5)
My maternal grandmother is loving and really cares about her family , yes. But my paternal grandfather really showed his love too; you could tell he didn't really love anything more than his grandchildren. He was far from distant.
10 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 2/14/09 - 4:13:06 PM EST (GMT-5)
I couldn't say; I've never met my paternal grandfather, as he died before I was born. My maternal grandmother is very loving, though.
10 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 2/14/09 - 5:09:50 PM EST (GMT-5)

my grandpa on my dads side told me he loved me a grand total of 3 times in my life before he died. I knew that he did, and he was a great man, but he and I were never as close as I wish we were. Both of my grandmothers were very loving and tended to spoil me whenever I saw them when I was younger.

There are enough no's to make you doubt this particular theory.
10 yrs ago, 9 mos ago - Saturday 2/14/09 - 5:42:44 PM EST (GMT-5)
It's kinda the opposite actually. My paternal grandparents are the most loving while my maternal grandfather (my maternal grandmother died when I was three) is the most distant.

The paternal grandfather part is spot on. My grandpa has never quite loved me very much, or any female in his family. He dotes on his grandsons though.

My maternal grandfather though was the most loving. He adored me, and I him. My maternal grandmother was a close second.

my paternal grandfather died many years ago, I can't decide which of the others is the closest
