I think of it being primarily Middle Eastern. Although what Abz wrote is technically true, its faith, architecture, and cultural foundation is that of the Ottoman Empire, which essentially was the Middle East until WWI.

Turkey was the Middle East. It has never alligned itself to Russia in Europe or Asia.

In the 19th Century the European powers went to war with Russia to prevent Russia gaining undue influence over Turkey.

In WW1 Turkey sided with Germany and Austria to protect it's interests from Russia.

Since WW2 Turkey remained outside the Communist Blok and delveloped stong relations with NATO and the EU.

The Crimian War. Charge of the Light Brigade, Florence Nightingale. When the French were the elite army of Europe. (In that their men didn't die from sh*tting on each other).
It's the same old war movie, just different actors.

I've always considered Turkey to be half European half Asian. Even in Istanbul the city is split down the middle with one half in Europe the other in Asia.

I think of it as being slightly less European than Greece, slightly less Middle Eastern than Syria, and significantly less Asian than Thailand.

When I look at that map, I see that it is attached to and bordered by mostly the Middle East. It is separated by water from Europe and only has a small border with Soviet block countries and no Asian connections.

Seems to me like its more of the ME than any of those other areas.
